Hello everyone, I am currently facing the problem of correctly installing the drawers of my new Malm dressers. The instructions seem a bit unclear to me in some parts, especially when it comes to the proper positioning of the side rails and inserting the drawer itself, which appear tricky. Could someone explain in detail how to hang the MALM drawers so that they slide smoothly and don’t get stuck? I am especially interested in tips on potential pitfalls or common mistakes to avoid. Thanks in advance!

Sometimes the drawer itself is a bit stiff when closing.I had the same issue! For me, it was because the drawer wasn’t perfectly aligned after hanging and was under some lateral pressure. Try adjusting the drawer slightly while hanging it – even a very small shift to the right or left can make a big difference. Once the drawer is in place, pull it all the way out, then you can easily rehang it and tilt it slightly. If you feel a little resistance, that’s actually a good sign. 🙂
Hello everyone! I had to completely reinstall my Malm chest of drawers last week, and it went really well! 🙂 My tip for anyone still struggling here: Be sure to follow the correct order! First, securely attach all the rails to the chest, then loosely screw the rails onto the drawer—but don’t tighten the screws completely!
This way, you can still make slight adjustments when hanging the drawer. Only tighten the screws fully once everything is working smoothly.
And very important: don’t use force! Sometimes a gentle upward and forward movement helps when hooking it in. I was nervous at first too, but with calmness, it works perfectly! Good luck, and feel free to share if you succeed! :-)

And very important: Do not use force!\It almost sounds like many people are being too rough with their MALM drawers. 🙂 In my opinion, this point clearly shows that the assembly is often either poorly planned or executed with insufficient precision. IKEA instructions are known to be concise, so it’s better to take a closer look and measure carefully rather than forcing parts to fit afterwards. Especially with MALM drawers, rough handling during installation puts long-term stress on the mechanism. I would definitely recommend approaching this more carefully, so no one has to use force.
Hello everyone,
I would like to add that there are indeed differences between the MALM drawers regarding the runners. Some older versions have different attachment mechanisms. Therefore, please make sure to check the manufacturing year or model before applying any advice.
In general, the basic principles apply: parallel alignment, correct positioning, and no force.
If @ronbe, could you please tell me exactly which model you have? Then we can address the appropriate steps more specifically.

If @ronbe, could you please tell me exactly which model you have? Then we can focus even more on the appropriate steps. Thanks for the tip! It’s the MALM chest of drawers with 3 drawers, model year 2019. The runners look pretty standard, no major differences compared to the pictures in the manual. I will go through the instructions here step by step and report back on how it went!
