Hello everyone, I have noticed that the drawers of my IKEA Malm dressers become very stiff and hard to open over time. This not only affects usability but also increases the strain on the drawer slides. Before attempting a complex repair, I would like to know: What is the most effective way to maintain Malm drawers to make them easier to pull? Are there any recommended lubricants or treatments for the drawer slides that won’t damage the mechanism? And what is the best way to apply them? I appreciate any tips and experiences you can share.
You can safely clean the plastic rollers with water and mild soap. Avoid using alcohol or aggressive solvents, as they might damage the material.
Regarding frequency: Under normal use, cleaning and lubrication twice a year are usually sufficient. For heavier use, such as with heavy loads, you can repeat this every 3-4 months. This ensures consistently smooth operation and protects the mechanism.

When cleaning the plastic rollers, I wondered if special care is needed – is it okay to use pure alcohol or only water and soap? From a technical perspective, it is best to avoid using alcohol. Plastic and rubber are sensitive to it and there is a risk of becoming brittle. Mild dish soap and lukewarm water are sufficient, followed by thorough drying.

And what about the frequency of maintenance?Your Malm drawers are not heavily used; a biannual check and, if necessary, some additional lubrication of the slides is practical. Avoid over-oiling, as this tends to attract dirt.

It is important not to apply the spray too thickly, otherwise dust will stickThis is a frequently underestimated point. Applying it too thickly will lead to dirt accumulation on the tracks over time. Therefore, always use it sparingly and spray several thin layers rather than one heavy coat.
Another tip: When lubricating, always make sure to completely empty the drawer beforehand. This minimizes mechanical resistance during opening and closing and allows the lubricant to spread more evenly.
Also, if your Malm dresser is a bit older, the slides and rollers might be mechanically worn out. In that case, the only solution is to replace the slides.
