Hello everyone,

I would like to know the best ways to customize the Malm furniture from Ikea. I’m particularly interested in techniques and materials that work well for modifying drawers, doors, or surfaces to turn the rather simple design into something unique.

Are there practical and affordable options that are also manageable for people with some DIY skills? What experiences have you had with methods like painting, applying adhesive films, adding knobs, or making structural modifications?

I would also like to understand how durable these changes are with everyday use and what to watch out for to prevent the furniture from looking worn or damaged after a short time.

Looking forward to tips, examples, and perhaps some advice on mistakes to avoid!

Hello Teba43,

I’d like to provide you with a clear, step-by-step guide on how to successfully customize Malm furniture.

1. Preparation: It is important to thoroughly clean the surface and, if necessary, lightly sand it. Without these steps, paint or vinyl film will not adhere properly.

2. Painting: Use a primer specifically designed for laminate if you plan to paint the Malm. Otherwise, the paint may peel off. A durable acrylic paint applied in several thin layers is recommended.

3. Applying vinyl film: Self-adhesive vinyl films are a great way to add patterns or wood finishes. The key is to apply them bubble-free, ideally using a squeegee.

4. Replacing or adding handles: New, more distinctive handles can greatly enhance the design. Metal or leather handles, for example, look very elegant.

5. Drawer decoration: You can also line the inside of the drawers with wallpaper or fabric – it looks great and adds enjoyment when opening.

6. Durability: A clear topcoat over the paint or vinyl protects against wear. Avoid cleaning with harsh or wet cleaning agents.

Common mistakes include insufficient preparation and applying paint layers that are too thick, which can cause sticking or cracking.

Summary: Preparation + appropriate primer + patient painting or careful vinyl application + protective topcoat = a long-lasting, personalized look.

I hope this helps!

Painting: Make sure to use a primer specifically designed for laminate

Oh yes, Jensson is right – I once painted my Malm dresser without priming and the paint started peeling off at the corners pretty quickly. 🙈

My tip for personalizing: just have some fun and get creative with adhesives! Rollers with self-adhesive patterns or even fabric scraps can make a big impact.

I also like mixing different materials, for example attaching wooden strips to the drawer fronts or adding small stickers for accents.

And don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be perfect – a bit of DIY charm makes the furniture feel much more personal 🙂

What I’ve learned though: avoid very strong adhesives that can pull off paint or veneer when removed. It’s better to add them little by little afterward!

Have fun upcycling!

My tip: Buy wood-effect films, apply them carefully, and seal with a matte clear coat. Affordable and looks elegant.

Absolutely, and regarding durability: When gluing wooden strips or similar elements, always use suitable adhesives that are not too brittle. Flexible construction adhesive or wood glue suitable for laminate works best.

Exactly, the clear coat is key. It not only provides protection but also unifies the appearance by slightly masking any edges of the film.

Here’s an additional tip for customization:

You can also work with chalk paint, which looks nicely matte on Malm furniture and can be lightly sanded later to create a shabby-chic texture. This can be done without professional equipment and offers great flexibility.

Question: Do you have any experience with handles made from leather or other unusual materials? Any tips on what to watch out for?
