Hello everyone, I have a rather specific request and hope to get some helpful advice here. I own a Malm chest of drawers set from IKEA and would like to make these pieces of furniture more accessible for my pets. Specifically, I’m looking for ways to modify or adjust the drawers or compartments so that my cats and their favorite toys can get in more easily, or so the furniture can be used as a retreat space. It is important to me that the appearance isn’t compromised too much and that the functionality remains intact, since I still want to use the furniture for its original purpose. Does anyone have experience or ideas on how to make Malm furniture more pet-friendly with a reasonable amount of effort?

If you don’t have any tools: Malm dressers are relatively easy to disassemble. Remove the drawers and place them on the floor. Then your cats will set up their resting spots right there, without the need for complicated furniture modifications.

As an addition, I would like to point out that the Malm series is made from relatively thin pressed wood. Any modifications to the structure should therefore be reinforced to ensure durability. I also recommend placing openings in areas that minimize impact on load-bearing elements. Openings at the back panel are popular since it can be easily removed. When used as a space for pets, converting the lower drawers is a good option. Alternatively, small, sturdy access aids—such as specially designed scratching posts leaned against the furniture—can also be added to assist.

Thank you for the tips so far! The advice about stability and avoiding splintered edges is especially important to me. Since I don’t have much experience with woodworking, I would like to ask: Which materials would you recommend for professionally and securely sealing or edging cutouts? Would rubber edging strips make sense here, or something else? And how do you properly attach these to surfaces coated with plywood veneer?

I recommend flexible rubber edge trims, similar to those used in furniture making or boat building. These can be effectively attached with clear assembly adhesive or contact glue. It is important that the edge fits precisely and has a smooth, rounded profile to prevent injuries. Alternatively, some hardware stores also offer special plastic edge trims for furniture, which can be either inserted or glued in place.

I can understand well that safety and comfort are important to you.

a bit of sandpaper to smooth the edges
is a very good addition before gluing an edge. For my cats, it was important that the opening was neither too large nor too small so they would feel comfortable and not confined. Trying a placeholder made of cardboard or foam before cutting can help better estimate the space.

Oh yes, making a cardboard model beforehand is great! 🙂 I did the same and discovered that my cats love having the most space. And regarding the appearance: you can even decorate the cut-out areas with fabric or plush covers attached with Velcro – this makes the whole thing much more inviting!
