ᐅ How can Ikea Hemnes furniture be reinforced for heavy-duty use?

Hello everyone, I am currently looking into ways to reinforce Ikea Hemnes furniture for heavy use. Specifically, I’m focusing on cabinets and dressers that are frequently and sometimes quite roughly used—both as surfaces and for storing relatively heavy items. The Hemnes models are stable enough for standard use but seem to reach their limits quickly in certain areas without additional reinforcement, especially around the drawer slides, shelves, and the joints of the carcass panels. My question is: What relatively simple methods, materials, or modifications are available to make these pieces stronger and more durable? Tips that require minimal tools and avoid full disassembly are particularly welcome. I appreciate any ideas!

I generally find the idea of reinforcing Ikea furniture for heavy use somewhat ambivalent.

I have a more nuanced view. The Hemnes series is popular precisely because the solid wood is generally more durable and long-lasting than most other Ikea lines made from veneered particleboard. Targeted reinforcement is therefore not automatically contradictory but can be useful to adapt the furniture to specific usage requirements.

Specifically, for heavy use, I recommend:
- Reinforcing the back panel with at least 6mm (1/4 inch) multiplex plywood or film-faced plywood
- Installing sturdy metal brackets in the interior corners
- Upgrading to high-quality metal drawer slides, ideally ball-bearing
- Securing shelves to the back panel with recessed wooden strips to improve load distribution

This way, you can significantly increase the mechanical strength without compromising the original construction.

I would like to add: When reinforcing, it is also worthwhile to regularly check the screws and joints and apply wood glue behind the connections if necessary. The stability of a frame can be significantly improved by minimizing any play. For the drawers themselves, the interior (for example, with additional crossbars) can also be reinforced to prevent wobbling or sagging.

For shelves, especially with wider dimensions like 80cm (31.5 inches) or more, it’s worth reinforcing each shelf board underneath with additional solid wood strips.

That’s a very good tip—I can only recommend it. One more thing: make sure the screws aren’t too long so they don’t go through the shelf and leave visible marks on the outside. For the strips, you can, for example, use battens, which are affordable and sturdy.

Additionally, you can equip the furniture feet with small felt pads or height-adjustable furniture glides to compensate for uneven floors. This helps minimize stress on the cabinet structure.
