Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some furniture from the Ikea Hemnes series and want to maintain it as sustainably and gently as possible to maximize its lifespan while minimizing environmental impact. Since the series is made of solid pine wood with a lacquer finish, I’m unsure which cleaning products and methods both protect the wood and are environmentally responsible. It would be helpful if you could share tips on how to care for Hemnes furniture in the most sustainable way without damaging the surface or using harmful substances. In particular, I’m interested in whether there are natural cleaning products, how often the furniture should be cleaned, and if special care is needed for small scratches or stains. Thank you in advance for your support!

A few additional tips for the sustainable care of Ikea Hemnes:

1. For stains, it is advisable to gently blot immediately with a dry cloth to prevent absorption.
2. Chemical cleaners containing alcohol or solvents should generally be avoided, as they can damage the finish.
3. There are also eco-friendly furniture care products based on natural ingredients—checking for certifications is recommended.
4. For minor scratches, fine furniture waxes can be used if they are compatible with the coating.

This approach not only reduces environmental impact but also decreases the need for new furniture by extending its lifespan.

Practically, I recommend:
- Cleaning with a slightly damp, soft cloth (microfiber)
- Using pH-neutral cleaners or plain soap solution when necessary

I fully agree with these recommendations. One more important point:

For treated pine furniture with clear lacquer, like HEMNES, home remedies such as olive oil or lemon juice are not advisable. These methods can contaminate or soften the surface.

The most sustainable approach is to regularly wipe the furniture dry, use a mild cleaner only when needed, and ideally protect the furniture from excessive moisture and direct sunlight. This is the only way to keep the protective layer intact and preserve the wood underneath properly.
