Hello everyone, I’d like to start a discussion on the topic “How can Ikea Hemnes be used as a base for furniture upcycling?” I’m particularly interested in the creative and practical approaches you know or have tried to transform this popular furniture series into something not only functional but also unique and sustainable. I’m thinking, for example, of altered surface finishes, built-in features, new functional elements, or even completely new pieces of furniture made from Hemnes parts. What challenges did you encounter with these modifications? And what were your best tips regarding materials, tools, and design ideas? Looking forward to all contributions, whether you’re a beginner or a professional!

For sustainable use of HEMNES, I recommend using the furniture strategically for functional extensions

I agree, Garry. In my last project, I cut doors from HEMNES furniture to create clever folding compartments. At first, I was skeptical because the cut edges weren’t perfect, but with sandpaper and a light stain, it worked out very well. Still, I think it’s important not to overdo it and to keep in mind that some basic components need to retain their original function. Otherwise, stability can quickly become an issue. I’m very interested in your experiences regarding stability or material fatigue when modifying these pieces.

HEMNES can be easily disassembled, and all parts can be used separately. For upcycling, I often use countersunk screws and wood glue to ensure extra stability. It is advisable to fill old drill holes before reassembling to prevent the furniture from wobbling later. Additionally, metal caps or foot protectors can be replaced to enhance the furniture's appearance or to cover up existing damage.
