Hello everyone,
I am considering using my Ikea Hemnes furniture in a damp area, specifically in the bathroom. The furniture is made of pine wood, which is generally not ideal for constant exposure to moisture. My question is: How can the Ikea Hemnes furniture be best prepared or treated to make it suitable for use in damp rooms without damage or swelling? Are there proven methods, such as specific paints, sealants, or other protective measures that are effective? I would appreciate any experience, practical tips, and advice on proper maintenance. Thanks in advance!

Oil wax is a good option if you want to maintain the natural wood appearance. It is important that the product is suitable for humid rooms and that the wood is thoroughly impregnated.
I also recommend applying multiple coats of wax, especially on edges and joints. Follow the treatment instructions provided by the manufacturer to ensure durability.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions during treatment to ensure durability.Thank you for the advice, that is really important. I wanted to add: Does anyone have experience with whether Hemnes wood can be treated without disassembly? That is, painting or varnishing the furniture fully assembled? Or is it definitely better to take it apart to reach the undersides of the boards and edges?

The reason is that water mainly penetrates at edges and joints, and if these are not properly sealed, the wood will eventually swell.
Also, the finish will be much more even if you can reach all areas properly. Of course, it requires more effort, but this way, you will enjoy the furniture in your bathroom for much longer.
You could also look at it the other way: A loose seal on assembled furniture is like an umbrella with holes – it hardly protects at all.

Even the best sealant is of little use if the bathroom remains very humid over time. That’s a very good point, thank you! So, besides treating the furniture, it’s also important to ensure adequate ventilation to protect the piece over the long term. Does anyone have tips on how often a sealant should be reapplied, or how to best check the wood during use?
