Hello everyone,

I am currently exploring how to integrate my Ikea Brimnes furniture series with common smart home systems. Specifically, I am interested in how to control BRIMNES dressers or beds with built-in LED lighting or other smart features using platforms like HomeKit, Alexa, or Google Home. Are there any proven solutions or recommended modules that can be discreetly installed to make lighting, charging ports, or sensors smarter? Additionally, I am curious about any experience with DIY approaches where the furniture is upgraded with sensors or actuators without affecting the appearance or functionality.

Looking forward to your detailed insights and experiences!

Hello ENNOEL,

Your plan to integrate the Ikea BRIMNES furniture with smart home systems is definitely feasible, but it depends on the specific equipment you have. The BRIMNES series itself does not come with smart components, so you will need to use aftermarket solutions. A common approach is to install smart LED light strips on the inside of cabinets or bed frames. These can often be connected to Alexa, Google Home, or HomeKit via Zigbee-, Z-Wave-, or WiFi-enabled controllers. It’s best to use wired connections when possible, as the setup is neater if there is a power outlet nearby.

For DIY solutions, devices like Sonoff modules or Shelly units work well and can be hidden inside the furniture to make LEDs or USB charging ports smart. For sensors, small motion detectors can be used to turn on lights automatically when a cabinet door is opened. However, pay attention to power supply—USB power banks or a fixed 230V (230V) connection are recommended.

In short:
- Smart LED strips (e.g., Philips Hue or more affordable options like Gledopto)
- Shelly or Sonoff as control units
- Motion sensors for convenience
- Integration with HomeKit/Alexa/Google Home (choose modules compatible with your platform)

If you like, I can also provide tips on how to make the wiring as invisible as possible.

Absolutely, that’s exactly what I did with my BRIMNES dresser! I simply stuck a few smart LED strips inside, which can be dimmed and change colors via the app – perfect for bedroom lighting. And the best part: my wife loves how I can say "turn on the light" by voice command and the light behind the furniture comes on.

What I also liked was installing motion sensors that turn the light on when someone passes by. Really cool, especially at night when you don’t want to fumble for the light switch. And the whole setup is completely invisible!

A tip from me: if you go for LED strips, make sure they are warm white, it looks the coziest. With RGB you can also have some fun for a party atmosphere 😄

Smart home technology is such a great opportunity to make simple furniture like the BRIMNES a bit more modern and comfortable without spending too much money.

If you want to connect BRIMNES with smart home systems, simply install Zigbee LED strips. Motion sensors near the cabinet doors activate the lights. For control, use Home Assistant or Alexa. Make sure to neatly hide all cables, as this is important.

Basically, there is no factory-installed interface on BRIMNES furniture for smart home integration. Therefore, upgrading to smart control mainly depends on additional accessories.

The following technical approaches are relevant:
- Use of wireless, cloud-enabled light control systems (Hue, IKEA Tradfri, Aqara)
- Installation of motion sensors and door/window contacts (usually Zigbee or Z-Wave) controlled via compatible hubs
- Integration of smart USB charging ports or power outlets with built-in app control

Installing these components inside the BRIMNES furniture requires careful cable management, preferably routed through the existing frame or back panel openings. Using a smart home hub that allows local control (e.g., Home Assistant, Homey) helps reduce latency and the risk of outages.

Battery-powered sensors are advantageous for minimizing installation effort. For powering the LEDs, power supplies with timers or motion activation are recommended.

Finally, I suggest deciding before installation whether control should be voice-operated, app-based, or automated (sensor-driven), so that the right hardware can be chosen accordingly.

Additional information:

If you want to install LEDs in BRIMNES, I recommend the following approach:

- Step 1: Choose the LED strip (warm white, dimmable, preferably running on 12V)
- Step 2: Plan the power supply. If a 230V connection is available, a suitable power supply unit is required. Alternatively, battery packs can be hidden inside drawers.
- Step 3: Integrate motion sensors, for example Aqara Motion Sensor, compatible with HomeKit and others.
- Step 4: Select a smart home controller: Shelly or Fibaro modules are very suitable and can be hidden behind power strips or inside the furniture itself.

Common mistakes:
- Using a power supply that is too weak, causing flickering
- Connecting LED strips directly without a controller
- Poor cable management, resulting in tangled cables

I recently created a guide where I explain these steps in more detail. Basically, the combination of motion sensors and LEDs inside furniture adds a lot of convenience and looks great.

If you need tips on wiring, I’m happy to help.
