Hello everyone,

I am planning to install shelves in my bathroom to create more storage space for towels, personal care items, and cleaning products. I am considering the popular Billy shelves from IKEA. Now I am wondering: How can I use Billy shelves effectively and durably in the bathroom?

Specifically, I am interested in:
- How resistant are Billy shelves to moisture and steam in the bathroom?
- Are there any special treatments or additions to make the shelves more suitable for bathroom use?
- Which installation methods or placements in the bathroom have proven effective?
- Tips for preventing mold or discoloration would also be very helpful.

I look forward to your experiences, ideas, and advice!

Good morning,

I’d like to add a brief note on installation: wall mounting is definitely the more stable solution in the bathroom. It prevents accidental tipping and provides greater safety against moisture exposure since the wood is not in direct contact with floor water.

I also recommend checking the sealing edges on the wall side or installing small spacers to prevent moisture from becoming trapped.

Regarding model selection: doors are useful if you want to protect hygiene items or smaller objects from direct moisture exposure. Open shelves mainly serve a decorative purpose.

If the shelves are to be mounted on the wall, be sure to choose suitable anchors that are designed for damp walls.

Hello everyone,

I would like to add to the discussion with a more technical perspective. BILLY shelves are generally not certified for damp environments, which presents several challenges:

1. Material structure: Particleboard absorbs water, with edges being particularly porous. The laminated surface offers some protection but is not waterproof.

2. Treatment: Clear varnish protects the surfaces; however, all cut edges, drilled holes, and edges must be treated with multiple layers. Unprotected edges can swell significantly.

3. Air circulation: In rooms without windows, it is important to run ventilation for at least 15 minutes after each shower to prevent mold growth.

4. Fastening: Use screws with stainless steel components to minimize corrosion caused by moisture.

5. Alternative: If possible, consider using cabinets or wood-based panels with melamine coating specifically designed for wet rooms.

What is the height from the bathroom floor to the point where you want to install the shelf? This is important to ensure air circulation at the base area.

If you like, I can send you a detailed procedure for sealing BILLY shelves in the bathroom.

I agree with most of the points but would like to add one more:

Since BILLY shelves are not waterproof, you should consider that moisture can also affect their stability when storing heavy items. The shelves are designed for light to medium loads.

Even load distribution across the shelves reduces deformation.

If possible, regular checks for signs of moisture damage are recommended so that any issues can be addressed early.

In conclusion: BILLY shelves are better suited as supplementary storage solutions in well-ventilated bathrooms, not as primary furniture in particularly damp areas.

In short:

- Buy shelves with doors
- Seal edges and drill holes
- Mount shelves at a distance from the wall
- Ensure good ventilation in the bathroom
- Prevent direct water splashes on the shelves

This way, you will have a durable solution with BILLY shelves in the bathroom.
