toelkauHello everyone, I am preparing for a move and want to transport my Ikea Pax wardrobes with as little damage as possible. The wardrobes are each about 2 meters (6.5 feet) tall, frame-based, and made from a combination of engineered wood panels and metal strips. They usually contain many adjustable shelves, drawers, and sometimes sliding doors. My specific question is: What is the best way to disassemble, pack, and secure these pieces of furniture to avoid damage during transport? Are there any special tips for protecting against scratches, breaks, or warping during loading, transit, and unloading? I am particularly interested in the order of disassembly, suitable packing materials, how to pack the parts so they are easy to handle, and if there are any practical experiences with transporting fully assembled wardrobes in case complete disassembly is not possible. Thank you in advance for helpful advice!
Hi, I would recommend completely dismantling the cabinet, collecting screws and small parts in labeled bags, and wrapping all panels well with blankets. Transport drawers and shelves separately, and protect the edges of standing surfaces with bubble wrap. This way, you avoid scratches and splinters. Good luck!

Completely disassemble the cabinet, collect screws and small parts in labeled bags, and carefully wrap all panels with blankets. You’ve already mentioned the key basics. Additionally, I would say: depending on how much time you have, it’s useful to prioritize which parts to select and pack first. Especially with PAX units, whose carcasses are often heavy and bulky, it helps to carry them with several helpers during transport and ideally cover the inside or back with sturdy stretch wrap or felt for extra protection.
You should definitely remove drawers and shelves before moving to prevent shifting or breakage. From my experience, storing the large side panels upright in the transport vehicle and protecting them with foam or thick blankets between the elements helps prevent pressure marks or twisting during the trip.
Labeling the screw bags is also essential to avoid confusion later. Remember to store heavy parts on the floor and towards the front of the vehicle to keep them from sliding around.
If you can’t disassemble everything, at least secure doors and drawers well to keep them from swinging open.

How can I best dismantle, pack, and secure these pieces of furniture to prevent damage during transport? Here is a clearly structured approach based on my knowledge of transporting PAX wardrobes:
- Dismantling: Completely disassemble the wardrobe as much as possible. Remove shelves, drawer components, small parts, and doors. These are particularly delicate and should be transported empty.
- Packaging: Use padded blankets, bubble wrap, or foam padding between the individual parts. Pay special attention to protecting the edges with edge protectors or similar materials, as these parts of PAX wardrobes are especially prone to damage.
- Securing: Arrange the panels and frames either lying flat or standing upright, with upright storage preferred to avoid warping. Secure them with ratchet straps and blocking to prevent any movement inside the transport vehicle.
- Small Parts: Collect and label screws, dowels, and fittings systematically. It is recommended to place these in small resealable bags attached to their corresponding carcass parts.
- Non-Removable Components: If full disassembly is not possible, at least secure or remove all movable parts (doors, drawers). Uncovered edges and joints should be padded to absorb shocks.
- Transport: Avoid stacking heavy loads on top of the wardrobe parts. Allow enough time for careful loading to minimize unnecessary vibrations.
This is a proven method that significantly reduces the risk of damage.
