Hello everyone,
some time ago I got an Ikea Pax wardrobe system and now I want to retrofit the doors with a soft-close function. Unfortunately, the standard Pax doors do not come with this feature, so I’m wondering what the best way to do this is.

Does anyone have experience with retrofit solutions for soft-close on Pax doors? Are there specific dampers or mechanisms that can be easily installed without having to modify the doors or hinges too much? I would appreciate tips on installation, suitable parts, and potential issues in advance, so I can carry out the retrofit properly.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Yeah, great idea! It makes the whole wardrobe much smoother when closing, no more loud banging. 😄 So, retrofitting it isn’t exactly easy, but definitely doable.

I tried this with so-called "push-to-close" dampers — they can be screwed onto the inside panels of the wardrobe and slow down the closing motion. It’s important to have the correct measurements; otherwise, it might get stuck or not work properly.

- Look for "soft-close dampers for wardrobe doors"
- Make sure to choose models specifically designed for furniture like Ikea Pax
- Usually, you’ll need a small drill and some screws

And don’t worry if you have to replace each hinge instead of the whole door — often one damper near the door hinge is enough. Hope this helps you get started!

You can buy soft-close dampers that can be mounted on the cabinet frame or directly on the door. Most are universal and fit Pax cabinets. Just screw them in, adjust, and you’re done.

Hello,

I had a similar issue and can share my experience. It is important to know that Ikea Pax doors with their special hinges are not originally designed for soft-close dampers, which means simple plug-and-play soft-close solutions are rare.

Therefore, the following is recommended:

- Soft-close dampers that can be screwed onto the inside of the cabinet, often called "push-to-close" or "soft-close" mechanisms
- The positioning is very important: they should be installed so that the door is slowed down by the damper before it fully closes
- It may be necessary to pre-drill screw holes yourself or use existing mounting points if there are any

Many users report that replacing the standard hinge arms does not help, as these are fixed on Pax doors and cannot be easily swapped without matching replacement hinges.

My advice: look for soft-close dampers specifically designed for front doors of large cabinet systems like Pax and follow the installation instructions carefully. Some DIY skills are required, but it is doable.

If you want to be absolutely sure, you can also check with Ikea whether there are original parts available, and some retailers offer compatible dampers as well.

Very important.

Summary of the technically relevant points:
- Ikea Pax doors usually use classic 35 mm (1.4 inches) drilled plate components with special hinges.
- The hinges normally do not have soft-close functionality. Retrofitting this requires either replacing the hinges with soft-close hinges (Pax compatible, if available) or installing soft-close dampers on the inside of the cabinet carcass.
- Soft-close dampers on the inside are the easiest to retrofit, as they only need to be screwed in.
- There are several suppliers offering soft-close dampers for cabinet doors commercially, including compatible sets for Ikea Pax.
- When installing, ensure that the dampers do not block the door guide and that there is enough space inside the cabinet.

Conclusion: Depending on your level of knowledge and DIY skills, retrofitting dampers on the cabinet carcass is worthwhile to keep the existing hinges. Otherwise, replacing the hinges is the cleanest solution.

Hello, I understand your concerns and the desire for the most convenient solution. Some time ago, I tried to equip my Pax doors with soft-close dampers myself and can share the following:

- The installation is a bit tricky, especially if the wardrobe is already fully furnished and stocked.
- You should take your time measuring and marking to position the dampers correctly.
- The doors might need some adjustment afterward, as the new forces affect the closing.
- It was important to me not to make visible changes to the doors. Therefore, I only worked inside the cabinet frame, without altering the exterior.

If you’re unsure about the installation, it’s best to have a helper nearby. The first attempts may seem complicated, but once you understand the principle, closing the doors is simply enjoyable.

Good luck!
