Hello everyone,

I have several Billy shelves from IKEA that I would like to place outdoors on my balcony. However, I know that the material—mostly particleboard and veneered wood—is not really designed for moisture or direct sunlight. My question is: How can I effectively protect Billy shelves for outdoor use to help them last as long as possible? I am looking for practical and feasible tips that can be done without professional equipment.

I want to avoid the shelves swelling, warping, or the veneer peeling off. Are there any special products, varnishes, or treatments that you would particularly recommend?

Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone,

I would like to suggest a method that I use myself for outdoor furniture, even when the base material is not specifically designed for outdoor use.

After thorough sanding and sealing with wood varnish, I have applied thin protective PVC films on my shelves. These films are water-repellent and UV-resistant. This additional layer helps protect the shelf from direct moisture. Simply secure the film on the edges or, if possible, fix it under an overhang.

Of course, this is not the most elegant solution, but for BILLY shelves that need to stand outside, it can noticeably extend their lifespan.

It is also advisable to regularly check the treatment and touch it up in case of scratches or wear before moisture can penetrate.

It’s also important to place the shelf in a well-protected spot (covered, sheltered from wind), so the protective measures last longer.
I fully agree with this; the location plays a very important role.
