Hello everyone,
I’m planning to customize my Ikea Hemnes furniture by repainting it to give it a more personal and high-quality appearance. I’ve already researched quite a bit, but I’m still unsure about the right surface preparation and paint selection.
I’m particularly interested in:
- What is the best way to prepare the surface, especially since many Hemnes pieces are white-stained or painted?
- Which types of paint are most suitable for solid wood furniture like Hemnes to ensure a durable and resistant finish?
- Are there any special tips or techniques that guarantee a particularly smooth and professional result?
I’m looking forward to any experiences and advice from those of you who have worked on similar projects with Hemnes furniture. Thanks in advance!

For application, you need good ventilation and preferably a fine brush or a good foam roller.I can only agree with that.
Regarding the tools:
- I recommend a high-quality foam roller for larger areas to avoid visible brush marks.
- Use a small fine brush for edges or corners.
When painting, make sure the layers are really thin; this helps them dry evenly and prevents runs.
Don’t be tempted to apply thick layers, even though it might seem faster to finish the job.
Also: Before painting, disassemble the furniture or at least remove doors and drawers to make it easier to reach all areas and work cleanly.
I also want to encourage you, especially with a piece of furniture like the Hemnes, which can look fantastic and gain a lot of personality through a custom paint job.
I was initially worried about whether I could manage it, since I’m not very skilled with DIY. What helped me was:
- Being patient and allowing enough time for drying and sanding between coats
- Not being too perfectionist, as small imperfections can add character
If you ever have doubts along the way, remember that a project like this is always a learning process. You gain experience—and if needed, you can always touch up or repaint the Hemnes furniture later.
I think it’s great that you’re taking on this DIY adventure!

Hemnes furniture is made from pine wood, which at Ikea often has a white topcoat or glaze. This needs to be thoroughly sanded before repainting; otherwise, the new paint will not adhere well long-term. I recommend using a random orbital sander for the large surfaces, as it greatly simplifies the work.
For applying the paint:
- If possible, use spray equipment (airbrush or compressor with spray gun) to avoid brush marks.
- If that’s not possible, use a high-quality foam roller along with special paintbrushes for clean edges.
Tips for a perfect finish:
- Always lightly sand between coats with very fine sandpaper (400 grit) to smooth out uneven areas.
- Make sure to remove all dust thoroughly between sanding steps.
Regarding paint choice: a two-component polyurethane (2K PU) paint is professional grade, but for DIY purposes, high-quality water-based acrylic paints are sufficient—they are easier to work with and more environmentally friendly.
What also helps: a fine detail brush, such as a sash brush or round brush, for intricate details, corners, and recesses.
