Hello everyone,
I’m looking for practical advice on how to arrange my BILLY shelves in a small room so that it doesn’t feel overcrowded or lose functionality. The room is about 12 m² (130 sq ft) and, in addition to doors, has a window on one wall, which limits the possible arrangements. The goal is to make the best use of the available space – both for storage and as a decorative element that doesn’t visually shrink the room.
Do you have experience with different setups, extensions, or useful accessories for BILLY shelves that work especially well in small rooms? How can I avoid making the space feel too cluttered when adding more storage?
I’m looking forward to your detailed suggestions, including tips on dimensions, layouts, or specific BILLY models that are particularly helpful in tight spaces.

Hello isatra,
I find your question very precise, which makes it easier to provide targeted help. Basically, with small rooms, it is crucial to use the available floor space as efficiently as possible while allowing the room to "breathe." BILLY shelves offer some good options here thanks to their modular design.
First, I would recommend placing the shelves along free wall areas rather than in the middle of the room. This visually opens up more space in the center. If you put the BILLY in a corner, corner shelf connectors often allow you to join two units in a more visually appealing way and make better use of the storage depth. Be sure to pay attention to the depth of 28 cm (11 inches), as the shelf should not extend too far into the room.
Another tip: to avoid overwhelming the space, you can choose open shelves or BILLY versions with glass doors — this creates a lighter feel. Colored backs can create contrast with the room and visually expand it.
Now to the functional details: when organizing, aim for a mix of closed boxes at the bottom and open compartments on top for decoration. Height is also an important factor—in small rooms, I recommend avoiding the maximum shelf height (2.35 m (7 ft 9 in)) and instead going for a medium height, around 1.80 m (5 ft 11 in), so it doesn’t look too bulky.
How about your room layout? Are you using the space as a home office, living room, or bedroom? This influences the best way to place and use the shelves.
Maybe you can provide some more details so that I and others can give you more specific advice.

I have two BILLY shelves with glass doors side by side, which makes the whole setup visually lighter and somehow even friendlier — despite offering plenty of storage space. Especially when you want to maximize a small room, a “see-through” cabinet feels much less bulky. Also, try playing with lighting, for example, small LED strips on the inside. They not only create cozy lighting but also highlight your books and decorations, instantly making the room feel more lively.
Another great tip is to place the shelf on the wall next to the window — this also directs the view outside and creates a nice balance.
And hey, don’t be afraid of shelves that reach all the way up to the ceiling — with open shelves at the top, it feels less heavy than filling the entire wall. Maybe add a few airy favorite items here and there.
Good luck! 🙂
