Hello everyone,

I recently bought some MALM furniture from Ikea and now want to childproof it, as my toddler is very curious and often pulls on drawers and doors. Specifically, I am looking for the best way to secure the drawers and the frame to prevent them from tipping over or opening when the child pulls on them. It would also be helpful to know which child-safe locks or devices you recommend for MALM drawers that won’t damage the furniture or significantly change its appearance.

Are there any tips on how to protect the corners or edges in case the furniture gets knocked over?

I would be very grateful for your experiences and recommendations, especially for practical and affordable solutions.

Thank you in advance!

The most important thing is to secure furniture to the wall – using the corner brackets provided by Ikea or suitable screws.

For drawers, there are special child safety locks that can be installed inside to prevent them from being easily opened. Corner protectors made of silicone can be purchased at any hardware store.

To secure MALM furniture, you should always combine at least two safety measures:

1. Wall anchoring: Since MALM dressers are relatively tall but quite light, they pose a tipping hazard for young children. IKEA provides appropriate anchoring kits that must be used. Install these near power outlets, as wall anchors are usually possible there.

2. Drawer locks: There are magnetic or mechanical child safety locks that can be installed inside the drawers to prevent unauthorized access by children.

3. Edge protection: Although the rounded corners of MALM models are more child-friendly than sharp edges, it is still recommended to use an additional silicone protector to cushion impacts.

A study on household accident prevention also points out that regular checks of the anchoring components are necessary, as screws can loosen with daily use.

This is an important tip, as flexible materials are especially useful for edge protection.

Yay, I really appreciate that child safety is taken so seriously here! 🙂

I have a MALM chest of drawers at home and can definitely recommend using the original wall anchors from Ikea! They’re really clever because my little one has often pulled on the drawers, and since securing them, nothing wiggles anymore!

In addition, I bought magnetic child safety locks – they’re easy to install and don’t affect the furniture’s appearance. My kids are constantly running around, and this combination is perfect for preventing accidents.

The corner protectors are a real highlight for us because they’re soft and stick well to the corners.

Don’t underestimate it—small modifications can make a big difference! Wishing you all the best of luck!! ;-)
