Hello everyone,
I am currently considering making our Ikea Besta cabinet doors childproof, as our toddler is becoming increasingly curious and tends to meddle with them. I am particularly interested in options for securely locking the doors without significantly affecting the functionality or appearance of the furniture. It is also important to me that the solution can be removed without leaving any residue, in case the cabinet needs to be used differently later on.
Has anyone had experience with suitable child safety locks for Ikea Besta doors or perhaps effective alternatives? Tips regarding installation and whether any tools are required would also be helpful. I would appreciate any specific advice, product recommendations, or DIY ideas.
Thank you in advance!

Ikea Besta cabinet doors often come with simple rotary or push handles that are easy for small hands to open. That fits well here, our doors have recessed handles that really make opening them easy. Magnetic solutions sound good, but I wonder if the magnet can be discreetly installed inside without damaging the doors or the cabinet carcass.

I would recommend paying attention to material aging and adhesion surfaces of the Besta doors as well. That’s a good point. Our surface is matte lacquered and not completely smooth, so that might affect adhesive strength. Screws are not ideal, though, since we might want to reconfigure the cabinets soon.
Thanks so far for all the helpful ideas!
Sometimes you have to try several options before finding the perfect solution. In our case, it helped to first test magnetic locks and then, if necessary, combine them with clamping mechanisms. This provides better stability.
Although caution is needed, I used double-sided, high-quality 3M adhesive tapes, which stick surprisingly well to the Besta doors.
Honestly, it’s a fine line between safety and practicality. But the peace of mind knowing that the child can’t access critical areas outweighs the small extra effort involved.

One final tip: Always make sure that the safety locks are childproof while still being easy for adults to open quickly in case of emergency.
Many manufacturers provide guidance on this in the product description. If you choose a magnetic solution, I recommend a system with a strong magnet and a matching key. These are a bit more complex to install but offer the best balance between security and maintaining the furniture’s appearance.
Good luck with your project!
