Hello everyone,

I recently assembled a Pax wardrobe from Ikea and am now considering how to equip the doors with magnetic catches to achieve quieter and smoother closing. My specific question is: Which types of magnetic catches work best for the IKEA PAX doors, how can they be effectively mounted on the frame or door, and what should be particularly considered during installation to ensure lasting and reliable functionality?

I prefer to work with high-quality materials and want to avoid the doors sagging over time or the magnetic catch being too weak. Does anyone have experience with specific magnets or ideal installation locations? For example, how can the narrow frame edge of the PAX doors be best utilized? The goal is a clearly noticeable but not too strong closure.

I look forward to your tips and advice!

I’d like to offer a different perspective.

I used so-called “built-in magnetic catches” that are recessed into the frame

Don’t get me wrong, I see the appeal, but especially with Pax doors, the risk of making a mistake during installation is quite high. Even drilling slightly off or misjudging the thickness can significantly affect the door’s functionality.

Also, why not use simple door dampers or soft rubber bumpers that can be installed cheaply behind the doors? This saves a lot of time, materials, and repair hassles.

Just a thought – not everything that is technically possible makes practical sense.

To summarize for neomo:
- Small neodymium magnets on the inside of the door and cabinet frame
- Magnets can be glued or fixed with screws
- Small disc magnets work well for narrow frames
- Align carefully to ensure the doors close properly
- Alternatively, built-in magnetic catches can be used if you have the right tools
- If using adhesive: make sure to clean surfaces thoroughly and allow proper drying time

This way, you have a good range of options depending on your skills and available tools.

My tip: Buy ready-made magnetic catches designed for furniture. They are easy to install, hold well, and look neat.

Pay attention to the position so that the magnet snaps properly when closing. Don’t forget to pre-drill.

A quick tip to start with:

The goal is a noticeably firm but not overly hard closure

You can best achieve this by testing several magnet strengths before final installation. Manufacturers often offer magnets with different holding forces, allowing you to find the ideal balance for your specific cabinet.

Another important factor not to underestimate is the precise alignment of the magnets; even a slight misalignment can significantly reduce their effectiveness. The perfect setup is when the magnets slightly overlap as the door closes, providing the best possible hold.

Good luck!

Thanks to everyone who shared such great tips! I would like to add: patience is important! Especially with adhesive magnets, it’s worth testing different positions temporarily before attaching them permanently. This way, you’ll be rewarded with an excellent result!

So don’t rush, but proceed step by step.
