Hello everyone,
I recently got a Billy shelf unit from IKEA with doors, and I’ve noticed that the door hinges are no longer as smooth as they were at first. The doors sometimes stick when opening and closing, which makes handling quite frustrating.
I’m wondering if anyone here in the forum has practical tips on how to make these doors operate smoothly again without having to replace the hinges entirely. Maybe there are useful maintenance tips, lubricants, or tricks that can help keep the mechanism running smoothly in the long term?
I’d appreciate any suggestions, along with brief explanations of why they work.
Thanks in advance!

The most common method to detect misalignments is to remove the door and inspect the hinges themselves.Alright, thanks! I will do it that way. If I remove them, does it make sense to take the hinges off completely at some point and then readjust them? Or is it usually enough to just loosen the screws a bit and then reposition them?
Hmm, I think sometimes a little fresh "oil for the metal heart" can work wonders – just a bit of silicone spray or PTFE spray on the locking mechanism. Open and close the doors a few times to help spread the lubricant.
And if the screws are a bit too tight, feel free to adjust them – not tightened like baking molds, but loose enough so everything moves smoothly. 🙂
Oh, and definitely avoid using grease, or you’ll end up with ‘glue’ instead of hinges, attracting dust like a cat’s winter fur! ;-)

BILLY doors often have hinges that can be adjusted with a small Allen key. That is partially correct. Depending on the model, there may also be hinges that require a screwdriver. Therefore, it is worthwhile to identify the exact type of hinge beforehand to choose the right tool and avoid damaging the screws.

Use silicone or PTFE (Teflon) sprays and avoid contact with water and dust. Also, keep the door frame clean, as dust in the gap can also cause sticking. Another tip: make sure there are no woodworms or insects present, as they can cause wood swelling, which affects the doors.
