Hello everyone,
I want to retrofit my Ikea Hemnes sideboard or display cabinet with LED lighting, but so far I haven’t found a really simple solution that is both visually appealing and technically feasible without a lot of effort or complicated wiring behind the furniture. It’s important to me that the lighting is energy-efficient, preferably dimmable, and ideally controllable by remote.
I was thinking of slim LED strips that can be mounted flexibly, possibly battery-powered to avoid tangled cables.
Does anyone know of practical and straightforward ways to integrate LED lighting into the Hemnes models? Are there recommended products or installation methods that have proven reliable?
I would appreciate any experiences and tips!

your project is definitely doable, and there are several approaches you can take. Mainly, LED strips are a good choice because they are easy to install, can be cut and stuck flexibly, and can be powered with suitable adapters thanks to USB or low-voltage connections.
I would recommend looking for LED strips with a self-adhesive backing (e.g., 3M adhesive), as the adhesion is reliable and the strips usually attach cleanly around corners and edges.
If control is important to you, you can buy sets with remote controls that often offer various colors and brightness levels. Even more convenient are those controllable via an app or voice control if you want to invest in a smart home system.
A key point in implementation is to measure the desired dimensions beforehand and plan a cable route that is as discreet as possible. Many Hemnes models have back panels that you can easily remove, allowing you to route the cable to the power outlet. A battery-powered option is also possible but typically lasts only a few hours.
If you want durability and a stylish finish, you can also mount small aluminum LED channel profiles, which also help with better heat dissipation.
In conclusion: retrofitting is not rocket science, but you should be patient, especially with cable management and installation.
Good luck!

I fitted my Hemnes shelf with warm white LED strips that I simply stuck inside along the top edge. I didn’t choose battery power because of the runtime, since I use the light quite often. So I routed the cables behind the furniture and secured them with clips – you can’t see anything.
A small tip: get LED strips with a dimmer so you can adjust the brightness and create a more pleasant atmosphere in the evening. And yes, cable clutter is minimal – you can manage it well with cable clips and maybe some cable trunking. For me, this is one of the best upgrades you can make; it really gives a high-quality feel afterwards.
In addition to the previous posts, here are some practical recommendations for retrofitting LED lighting in the Ikea Hemnes series:
- Use 12V LED strips with sufficient brightness (at least 300 lumens per meter) for even illumination.
- Choose LED strips with good color rendering (CRI >80) for pleasant light quality.
- For mounting, extra-thin LED strips with 3M adhesive work well; they are durable and easy to install.
- Cables: Use cable ducts or clips to neatly route power connections. Many Hemnes furniture pieces allow removal of the back panels for access.
- Control: RGB or white light controllers with remote control or Wi-Fi offer more convenience.
- For fewer cables: battery-operated LED strips are an option, but frequent recharging can be inconvenient over time.
My advice: plan the cable routing in advance to avoid visible wires. Depending on the model (sideboard, display cabinet, shelf), the installation method varies, so check beforehand how much space is available behind and how the back panel can be removed.

Does anyone know practical and straightforward ways to integrate LED lighting into the Hemnes models?Hello,
I upgraded my Hemnes shelf with LED spotlights recessed into small holes. If you choose LED strips: make sure to use strong adhesive, as the back panels often have a matte surface.
Many prefer battery-powered solutions to avoid cables; alternatively, I recommend 12V power supplies with sockets nearby.
My key to success was securing the cables twice with cable ties to prevent them from coming loose or getting caught when the furniture is moved.
Dimmers and remote controls add convenience but are not essential. If you want a smart setup, you can also opt for solutions compatible with Alexa or Google Home.
Overall, expect to invest some effort, especially in careful routing and installation, but then you’ll enjoy the lighting for a long time.
