Hello everyone,
I want to paint my IKEA Malm furniture, but I have no experience with painting furniture and am looking for a simple yet durable method. My goal is to achieve a smooth and long-lasting surface without spending too much time or using excessive materials.
I am especially interested in tips on surface preparation, the type of paint needed (preferably something that adheres well to veneer surfaces), and advice on application methods (spray mist, brush, roller?).
Are there any specific products or techniques you would recommend for painting Malm furniture that are suitable for beginners?
Thank you in advance!

Hello Kinmick,
To prepare the Malm furniture, you should definitely start by thoroughly cleaning the surface and then lightly sanding it. The veneered surface is quite smooth, so fine sandpaper with a grit of 220 is sufficient for the intermediate sanding. Make sure to completely remove the dust before painting, for example with a damp cloth or a microfiber cloth.
For painting, I recommend using a high-quality acrylic or synthetic resin paint suitable for furniture that adheres well to veneered surfaces. Spray paints work very well, as they apply evenly and do not leave brush marks. If you don’t have a compressor, quality spray cans also work quite well.
Alternatively, you can use a furniture roller, but the surface often isn’t as smooth as when spraying.
In summary: clean, sand lightly, remove dust, then apply paint in thin coats, sanding lightly between coats, and apply multiple layers for durability.
I hope this helps you.

Spray paints are very suitable because they distribute finely and do not leave brush marks.I can only agree with that! 🙂
I have personally painted Malm dressers and made sure not to skip the intermediate sanding. At the beginning, definitely make sure you work in dust-free and well-ventilated rooms.
For the paints, you can also try chalk or acrylic paints; they are quite forgiving for beginners. If a drop or drip occurs, you can let it dry and then carefully sand it down.
A small tip: if you don’t want to use a spray can, take a small foam roller – it helps to avoid streaks. And always apply several thin layers; that way, the result looks truly professional.
Enjoy your project! 🙂
Hello Kinmick,
I’d like to add that proper sanding and using a primer before painting are crucial. Although the Malm furniture is veneered, the surface can still pose challenges for the paint. A bonding agent ensures better adhesion and prevents peeling.
After gently sanding the piece (grit 180 to 220), you should apply a suitable primer designed specifically for smooth or veneered surfaces. Make sure to let it dry completely before you start painting.
Sanding between coats with very fine sandpaper (grit 320–400) also greatly improves the finish, making the surface especially smooth.
If you’re concerned about smell and paint properties: water-based paints have a much lower odor and dry faster than solvent-based ones.
If you like, I can recommend some products.

However, I would add that the choice of application tool has a significant impact on the result. For beginners, fine applicators are recommended, such as paintbrushes with synthetic bristles or a small foam roller. These tools ensure an even distribution and help reduce drip formation.
Also, you should always apply the paint in thin layers and allow each layer to dry thoroughly to achieve a smooth, even finish.
Another tip: To remove dust from the furniture, you can use antistatic cloths, which help minimize airborne dust settling on the surface.
Overall, the painting process requires some patience, but with proper preparation and high-quality materials, even beginners can achieve good results.

I want to paint my Malm furniture from IKEA and am looking for the simplest method that is still durable. In short: clean the furniture, lightly sand it, apply a primer, spray two thin coats of paint, sanding lightly between coats.
This provides a clean finish without much effort.
