Hello everyone, I am currently exploring ways to customize the doors of the IKEA Platsa cabinet to make my living space more personal and harmonious. I am particularly interested in options for enhancing or completely transforming the standard white or neutral doors—whether through paint, materials, or additional elements. It is important to me that these modifications are durable and as straightforward as possible, without affecting the functionality or making the doors unusable. Does anyone have experience with, for example, vinyl wraps, painting, wood or fabric coverings? And is it also possible to implement creative ideas like magnetic boards, chalkboard paint, or built-in LED lighting? I would greatly appreciate a detailed explanation of the various options, including their advantages and disadvantages, as well as any tips on tools or materials.
In addition to the previous tips: If you want to apply veneer, keep in mind that the doors are coated with melamine, which can limit the adhesive strength of wood glue. It is better to use contact adhesive or construction adhesive that is suitable for smooth surfaces.
Also, before applying, lightly sand the surface with fine sandpaper to improve adhesion. Make sure the veneer is not too thick; thin veneer sheets around 0.6 mm (0.02 inches) work best to avoid putting stress on the hinges.
Regarding cleaning: Foils are usually low-maintenance but should be wiped with a damp cloth. For painted doors, matte finishes are more durable than high-gloss ones.
Tip: Test your method on a sample piece before starting larger work.

I personally painted my Platsa doors with chalkboard paint, which was a nice, playful solution for me. At first, I was unsure about the durability, but after 9 months of daily use, everything is still fine. It was important for me to protect the paint from dust by letting the doors dry thoroughly right after painting and wiping them gently.
I would recommend choosing high-quality films if you go with adhesives. Cheap films can wrinkle easily and are difficult to smooth out again. If you decide to go with paint, water-based colors are often less odorous and easier to apply.
Looking forward to hearing what you decide!

A few final tips:
- If you choose films, make sure they are specifically designed for furniture, as this significantly affects their durability.
- During installation, ensure a dust-free environment, as small particles often cause bubbles.
- Painting is a bit more labor-intensive, but it gives a high-quality impression. Be sure to use a small brush or a foam roller.
- For the Scandinavian style, light pastel tones or natural wood shades work particularly well.
That’s a good decision; it keeps maintenance and potential repairs manageable.
If you have any questions, just get in touch. Good luck!

I’m less interested in electrical additional features since I want to keep the cabinet as simple as possible.
