Hello everyone, I’m planning to buy an Ikea Pax wardrobe system and now need to decide which doors to choose. My main question is: which Ikea Pax doors are considered especially sturdy and durable? I’m interested not only in daily wear and tear but also in their longevity over several years, particularly regarding the materials, hinges, and surfaces. Does anyone have experience or can recommend which door models are truly robust, even with frequent use? Thanks in advance for your insights and tips!

I’m also interested in how veneer compares to melamine or laminate when used around children or with frequent opening. To add to this question: Veneer requires more careful handling because, like real wood, it is vulnerable to moisture and mechanical damage. Melamine, on the other hand, is easier to maintain and more resistant to scratches and everyday wear, making it more suitable for wardrobes and furniture that are used often.
Additionally, it should be noted that Ikea offers different door thicknesses. The thicker options noticeably improve stability but are also more expensive.
In areas where high stress is expected, it can be worthwhile to choose the slightly more expensive doors. Extra durable hinges are also sometimes available directly from the factory, which increases longevity.

Regarding hinges: If you feel that the standard fittings are not sufficient, you can sometimes install stronger ones, such as Blum hinges. They are often more durable and allow for finer adjustment of the doors.
This significantly increases the lifespan of individual doors, even if the door materials themselves are not changed.

Thank you very much for the numerous and detailed responses!
For me, it will probably be the doors with a melamine coating in the matte version – they seem to offer a good balance of durability and ease of maintenance, especially for everyday use with children.
I also find the idea of investing in more heavy-duty hinges very sensible.
Has anyone here had experience with retrofit kits or replacing the hinges on Pax?
