Hello everyone, I am currently thinking about how to customize the doors of the IKEA Platsa system in a way that is not too complicated or expensive. I’m interested not only in standard colors but also in creative options like vinyl wrapping, painting, or using special handles. Does anyone have experience or tips on how to modify the doors of the PLATSA shelving unit to make them look personal and stylish? I am especially interested in simple techniques that are easy for less experienced DIYers, but I’m also open to ideas for more advanced projects. Are there any recommended materials or methods that have proven effective? Looking forward to your suggestions!
Hey Johan40, if you’re up for something original – how about magnetic paint? You can prime your doors first with magnetic paint and then apply chalkboard paint on top. This way, each door panel turns into a cool message center that you can redecorate anytime, depending on your mood.
I would definitely recommend that, especially for chalkboard paint or frequently used surfaces. It helps keep the doors looking stylish for a longer time.

If you want to take the risk, you can also seal the surfaces with clear varnish; that provides extra protection.

Thank you for the many helpful tips so far! I find the idea of combining magnetic paint and chalkboard paint especially interesting since I want to use the doors functionally as well. A question on this topic: Are there any special considerations when applying these types of paint or films if the doors still need to latch properly or if there could be issues with the hinges? Also, I’m unsure about the color choice – which colors work well with a modern, more minimalist living style without becoming too dominant? Looking forward to your opinions!
