How did you feel just before moving into your new home? We are about to move in (early September), and of course, the excitement is really high, but every time I notice a new “to-do,” like a lit house number, a mailbox, or some outdoor lights. I feel like this will go on forever, and that feeling is really wearing me down. The feeling of never being finished. I know you can’t have everything done at once; many things will be added over time. Right now, I just can’t focus or come up with ideas for the utility room. Most of the furniture has been ordered, but many small things are still missing, like a desk, lamps, or dressers. Some things need fixing, and at the moment, painting is in progress. I’m still ignoring the outdoor area for now, but I think that will change quickly once we’re living in the house and I see the construction site outside every time I look out.
How long did it take for you to really feel at home? When did you feel completely “done”? Or does a house always remain a work in progress, with something to do all the time? Looking forward to your answers :-)

I wouldn’t be able to order complete furniture in advance. I prefer to first see how everything looks, how the lighting really is, and how a room feels. Apart from the bathroom vanity, I haven’t bought any other furniture in advance. Not even a kitchen. To my own surprise, the kitchen turned out to be black instead of white. I still really like how it turned out.You can get a good sense of the lighting and overall feel during the shell construction phase and then place orders. We purchased everything except the kitchen during the shell phase, partly to avoid the price increases of up to 25% in July/August. I believe the kitchen purchase and layout should be finalized before the shell construction.

But I need to first experience the room’s atmosphere. I also find it difficult to judge from pictures. Then I see a small unique piece, a nice piece of furniture, and I start thinking and experimenting... I have often rearranged several times. That’s why I have many individual items that look good arranged both in the bathroom and the living room 🙂

motorradsilke18 Aug 2021 11:31Today, the screed is being laid at our place. Since we are still living on the property, the new house already feels like home.
Over the past few weeks, we have chosen and ordered tiles and hardwood flooring. Most of the furniture is in storage and will be brought back into the house, so we only need to select and buy a few new pieces.
We have a tight schedule: painting will start in mid-September, followed by tile and hardwood installation in early October.
I can hardly wait to get started. The next few weeks, while the screed is drying, will be tough since I just have to wait.
We plan to move in by mid-October. Although not everything will be finished by then, the most important parts will be done. If curtains or a few small furniture items are still missing, that’s not a big deal, but they need to be added soon. I definitely don’t want to live for months in an unfinished house.
Fortunately, the outdoor areas are mostly completed; only the surroundings directly next to the house need to be redone. Depending on the weather, this is scheduled for either winter or spring. In spring, the container will be removed, the area restored, and from summer on, I really want to be working only on minor details.

The annoying thing is, once you finish one task, you immediately see the next one(s) ... 🙄

At home, it really felt like home three days after moving in, which was a great feeling! There was a lot of sweat and even a bit of blood involved...
