How did you feel just before moving into your new home? We are about to move in (early September), and of course, the excitement is really high, but every time I notice a new “to-do,” like a lit house number, a mailbox, or some outdoor lights. I feel like this will go on forever, and that feeling is really wearing me down. The feeling of never being finished. I know you can’t have everything done at once; many things will be added over time. Right now, I just can’t focus or come up with ideas for the utility room. Most of the furniture has been ordered, but many small things are still missing, like a desk, lamps, or dressers. Some things need fixing, and at the moment, painting is in progress. I’m still ignoring the outdoor area for now, but I think that will change quickly once we’re living in the house and I see the construction site outside every time I look out.

How long did it take for you to really feel at home? When did you feel completely “done”? Or does a house always remain a work in progress, with something to do all the time? Looking forward to your answers :-)

There always seems to be something to do... forever 😉

I enjoy constantly coming up with new ideas and putting them into practice.
But it would definitely be possible without the constant remodeling... that would require quite a bit of discipline from me 😀

That really depends on how far along your construction site is at the time of moving in.

If everything is already finished, truly everything (including the exterior landscaping…), then you are essentially done at first. But if you move into a "construction site," the building process of course takes longer.

Due to a lot of self-performed work (landscaping, paving, balcony slabs, complete in-situ basement construction after prefabricated elements), more than 2.5 years passed after moving in… 😎

And I agree with the previous poster, you are never really finished with a house.

That is normal, even with new builds. With a house and garden, you’re never really finished; you could probably ask anyone who owns property and doesn’t have a money tree. We moved in after partial renovations in 2017 and have more or less gotten around the garden once, but there’s still quite a bit to do inside the house. And once we’re done with that, new projects will inevitably come up over time. If you want to be “finished,” owning a house might not be the right choice 😀

Moved in last October, and after some smaller construction tasks (hedges, terrace tiles, fences, lawn edges, etc.), the final installations (front door canopy and railings) and furniture have now been ordered and are expected soon. So, for us, about a year after moving in, we will be mostly through the major work.

I already have grass at the front for the children. The slope and plants are also in place. The final layer of soil will be added on Friday. We are moving in on Saturday. I ordered all the lights at once and had the electrician install them right away. However, there will still be numerous other ongoing construction tasks... Interior doors will be installed later, and the plumbing completion will only happen the following Monday... etc. But I've heard of worse situations 🙂
