Hello,

we are currently planning the flooring in our house and are considering whether we can install and glue down part of the hardwood flooring ourselves. What are your experiences?

The flooring is click-lock hardwood in LHD, measuring 1.90 m * 19 cm (6 ft 3 in * 7.5 in), 15 mm (0.6 in) thick.

We want to glue it down to reduce impact noise and improve the walking comfort. We are reasonably handy and have installed floating floors several times before.

I look forward to your opinions.

If you already have experience with floating installation, it’s only half as difficult.
- Pay attention to the installation direction; unlike floating floors, you shouldn’t step on the glued sections.
- The subfloor should be clean and as level as possible (especially with a length of 1.9m (6.2 ft)).
- Otherwise, prepare the subfloor first with a leveling compound.
- There are different click systems. Most snap together from above. In those cases, the adhesive is applied to the subfloor and spread with a fine notched trowel (tile adhesive trowel).
- However, there are also click systems that lock from the side (e.g., bamboo flooring from Joka). For these, a tapping block and spacers are needed (for example, from a laminate flooring installation kit). To avoid mess, apply the adhesive carefully to the underside of the plank rather than on the subfloor. If any adhesive gets on the surface, wipe it off immediately while still wet.

Thank you AOLNCM. I think I will give it a try; it doesn’t seem too complicated. I’ll start in the walk-in closet, so I have a few square meters (square feet) to practice on.

I would like to add a few more comments.

which assumes that you pay attention to some important points:
Substrate:
- must have sufficient strength
- must be dry
- must be clean and free of dust
- should not absorb too much moisture (if necessary, prime first)
- must be level

Adhesive:
- ideally, the adhesive should be suitable for both the flooring material and the substrate. It is also important to use the correct notched trowel. Product information for adhesives usually specifies the appropriate notch size for the trowel, so be sure to follow that.

Tools:
- when bonding, it is important to have everything ready that you need, as installation may need to proceed quickly.

Installation:
- for bonding, it is important to first properly align the room. Be sure to measure how many rows of parquet you will need. The boards at the beginning and end should be roughly the same width.
- the first 2-3 rows should be laid dry at first. The first row needs to be adjusted to the wall, especially if it is uneven. Then apply adhesive only as wide as the boards being installed.
- pay attention to temperature and humidity.

If you consider these points (not entirely exhaustive) and follow the manufacturer’s processing guidelines, success should be assured.
