ᐅ Garage door – one large or two smaller ones?

Hello,
I would like to hear your opinions and experiences.
Initially, our garage was planned with two doors, as shown in the picture. However, during the further planning phase, we decided to go for one large door instead. This choice was partly for aesthetic reasons and partly because we thought that if repairs on the car or similar work need to be done, or if we ever need to park a larger vehicle, it would be easier to drive straight into the garage without a supporting post in the middle.
Our construction manager has raised concerns that with a door width of at least 5.50 meters (18 feet), the slats might sag after several years, and the wear on the tracks where the door runs would be significantly higher due to the size and weight of the door.
We are now unsure what to do. What are your experiences with wide garage doors? It will be a Hörmann door. What have you installed? What advantages and disadvantages have you noticed? What are the benefits of two single doors, and what are the drawbacks? Have you had any technical issues with a door width of around 6 meters (20 feet)?
Kind regards

We also have a wide one (5m) (16 feet) and are very satisfied with it. Initially, we also considered taking two small ones. But I would always choose a large one again.

2 gates with installation costs for both? Also a point where you can save money. With the center post, it is much harder to maneuver inside the garage when you are working on something.

If you have two doors, you can open just one when planing, drilling, tinkering, or whatever, and you won’t be exposed to the wind. With one large door, the garage can quickly become uncomfortable...

I think it really depends on the intended use.

If it’s meant to be just a garage for parking, definitely one large door!

@Golfi90 That was also one of the site manager’s arguments—that you don’t have to open the entire front during a party. However, for us, the garage is mainly used for parking.

@tomtom79 We actually thought that two smaller doors would be more expensive because of the two systems. The contractor said he would get back to us about the large single door, but it sounded like a big door might be more costly. He mentioned something about the lintel needing to be twice as thick and that a large, high-quality door would come at a price. Something along those lines—we don’t have a price yet, but that’s how it sounded.

A double clear span length does require a somewhat more complex lintel, and a narrower one can also make a more affordable gate sufficiently stiff.

However, the garage is really used primarily for parking in our case.

Congratulations on your atypical situation: in most double garages, at least one side usually doesn’t store everyday cars but rather pedal cars / scooters / clutter, motorcycles, or other seasonal vehicles. The double-wide door then every time exposes this storage side to the outside world and lets wind blow in pollen and the like. With a center post, you have to maneuver three times, and the car usually ends up in the middle, even if you didn’t drive it in perfectly centered. The “him and her” synchronized simultaneous in- and out-driving only happens in American cheesy movies. In reality, with a single large double door, almost every time one side is unnecessarily opened as well.

This is often the case, but according to garage regulations, it is not permitted because garages are only intended for parking motor vehicles.
So, theoretically, they cannot be used as a hobby room or storage room...
