Hello everyone,

I have a (maybe silly) question, but I have to say that the so-called master Google isn’t helping me, and I ended up here in the house building forum.

Does anyone know if this is possible?
I have a wall, or rather a plastered gypsum board painted in bright red, and I would like to apply a textured plaster on top, about 2mm (0.08 inches) thick. A decorative plaster.
My question is: Will it adhere to the red paint layer, which is about 1mm (0.04 inches) thick, or will it just fall off afterwards?

I’m willing to repaint the surface three times if necessary, in case the red paint shows through…!

Or in short:
Can I apply a finishing plaster directly over a painted wall?

Please let me know! (...pretty please ;-)
THANK YOU!!!!

I am an amateur (female), but I have already painted many walls and also worked with textured plaster. At that time, I didn’t know anything about primer or other barriers and simply applied plaster directly over painted walls (latex-based paint). It held up for years! 🙂

Nothing showed through either.
Maybe it was also thicker than sprayed plaster?, about 2mm (0.08 inches)…
Latex paint bonds with the wall, doesn’t it?
I should also mention that these were normally plastered walls.

I would give it a try. If the area is too large, just test it in a corner or on a narrow side wall and wait 3 days… poke around to see if it crumbles 😉

Can I apply a top coat plaster over a painted wall?

Sure, no problem. Paint the wall or ceiling with a bonding primer (possibly prime 2-3 times beforehand), then apply the plaster over it. It’s best to create a test patch first and observe how the material reacts.
