Hello,

I need to renovate an exterior wall. It’s the weather-exposed side and the plaster has fine cracks, with some plaster already coming off, especially around the roller shutter box (two different materials there). I see a ventilated cladding with rhombus-shaped battens as the most cost-effective option. I’m also considering fiber cement panels (honestly, I like them better and they seem easier to install), but they are quite expensive. The area is about 60m² (645 sq ft), excluding 3 windows and a patio door.

I want to cover the exterior wall with planed, natural-colored Siberian larch rhombus battens. Since I plan to leave a joint gap of 8-10mm (0.3-0.4 inches), I’ll need to protect the wall behind from driving rain. For that, I intend to staple a breathable membrane to the wall. This membrane will then be supported by the counter battens.

Is this a suitable approach, or could it cause moisture problems?

The proposed assembly would be:

- breathable membrane
- counter battens
- rhombus-shaped battens

Thank you and best regards,
Jörg

Is it possible to do it like this?
No, you have forgotten the insulation, which you are required to include. Or is this about a newer insulated facade or a listed (heritage) facade? How are you currently protecting the facade against driving rain?
