ᐅ Experience: Are Alternative Door Handles for KALLAX Better than the Original IKEA Ones?

kutayseHello everyone, I would like to start a discussion about whether alternative door handles for the KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA actually perform better in practice than the original IKEA handles.
My main concern is whether other door handles or grip options can improve comfort, stability, and appearance without requiring compromises in assembly or durability. Perhaps there are specially designed solutions or tips for equipping KALLAX doors with handles that are more durable and ergonomic than the usual IKEA handles.
I am especially interested in your experiences with aftermarket alternatives. Are these alternatives actually worthwhile? Are there unexpected challenges when attaching them? Background: I want to upgrade my KALLAX (with doors) because I find the IKEA handles somewhat cheap in terms of feel and appearance. Many thanks in advance!

Hello Kutayse,
I would like to go into more detail on this topic because there are many nuances that are often overlooked at first glance:
First, the installation of the IKEA door handles on KALLAX is specifically designed for the veneer material of the doors; glued or screwed handles must always be chosen carefully to avoid damaging the doors or compromising their stability.
Many aftermarket handles, especially those made of metal, look better and feel more solid, but the fittings are not always an exact match. This means you often have to drill or modify the holes to position them correctly.
Another factor to consider is ergonomics – the original handles are quite small and rounded, while some alternatives have longer or wider shapes that can actually improve grip comfort. However, overly large handles can interfere with tight spaces or alter the characteristic KALLAX style.
Personally, I recommend checking the measurements beforehand and, if possible, making prototypes from wood or plastic to test how the handles feel in hand. Handles with concealed fasteners are particularly interesting because they maintain a clean look, but the installation effort is significantly higher.
Regarding durability: In addition to the mounting method, the surface coating is important – cheaper models often deteriorate quickly or discolor when exposed to moisture or greasy fingers.
Will you be opening your KALLAX doors frequently, or will they mainly be used for storage? This also affects the choice of handle.

My doors are already somewhat heavy with the original KALLAX lock, so I don’t want anything cheap that might give way under pressure.

I understand your concerns, kutayse! It’s always frustrating when you invest in a product and the handles start to wobble or wear out after a short time. I once had a KALLAX with the original handles, but didn’t find them very comfortable to grip.
I then switched to a model with wooden handles, which felt much more high-quality and improved the overall look. However, I have to say the installation was a bit tricky because the drill holes had to be adjusted.
If you want something with a wood appearance, that could be an option. On the other hand, if you prefer something sturdy and simple, I would suggest clear stainless steel variants.
Don’t stress too much; every modification brings experience, and the KALLAX is quite durable – nothing will break easily if you do it properly.

Hey Kutayse!
I love customizing my furniture with small details like handles. It’s amazing what you can do! 🙂
I definitely recommend trying handles made of solid wood or even leather straps. That really gave my KALLAX a lot of character and it feels warm to the touch.
And don’t worry about installation—with the right instructions and a little patience, it always works out! You don’t have to change everything at once; start with one shelf before doing all the doors. Keep at it and have fun designing! 🙂
