Hello everyone,

We have received a quote from an electrician (a friend from our personal circle). However, we are a bit unsure about the costs and whether this is a “normal” price. It concerns a new installation in an existing building of about 150 sqm (1,615 sq ft) near Düsseldorf.

I’m particularly interested in items such as power outlets, light switches, and network sockets. It is a wooden house with installation layers and a new floor structure, so no chasing in the walls.

All Gira standard and including wiring:
Per power outlet: €50
Per switch: €55
Per two-way switch: €90
Per CAT 2-gang outlet: €100
Per thermostat for underfloor heating: €120
Distribution board: €2,000
Patch panel with connection: €450

At the moment, it is quite difficult to get quotes and find electricians who also have time, but I would request more offers if you think this is clearly overpriced.

Thank you!

Our electrician just finished everything at our place last month, and I can share our prices with you. Also from NRW, specifically OWL. Building with a general contractor (GC), so there are additional charges.
  • Power outlet -> €45
  • Outdoor power outlet with switch -> €95
  • Patch panel (12 ports), installation of distribution cabinet and connection of network cables -> €540
  • Single LAN outlet -> €126
  • HDMI cable duct (TV to sideboard) -> €250, completely overpriced, which we also mentioned, but the guys were otherwise very reasonable and worked quickly/efficiently, so whatever.
  • GIRA Sensotec LED stair lighting -> €230
  • Switch with single light fitting - single switch -> €109
  • Crossover switch: single light fitting - multiple switches -> €200
Compared to the surcharge, the prices seem reasonable except for the power outlet. I will discuss this with the architect and see what he says. Thanks to everyone, and if anyone has further comments, please feel free to share.

Prices from mid-2022 in Saxony-Anhalt directly through the electrician from the developer:

Socket outlet 32.50
Single data outlet 131.25
Two-way switch 123.75
Single-pole switch 66.25
1 recessed LED spotlight 63.75

Of course, net prices.

Except for the socket outlets, I find the prices reasonable, considering this is in Düsseldorf and inflation has increased by another 7% since mid-2022.
And he’s coming in September... ask others, they will probably come in September as well, but in 2024.

In our case, the additional costs for sockets, switches, and network outlets were about 10-20€ cheaper, including chasing into the sand-lime brick, and that was with the electrician from the general contractor. Against this background, it doesn’t sound like a friendship discount to me.

I do find the price per socket comparable to the price for additional sockets.

And that’s why you shouldn’t compare apples and oranges.

If you are building with a general contractor and have to pay extra per additional socket to your electrician, you must not forget that as the homeowner you have already paid the general contractor for the standard electrical installation according to the scope of work. Most cables are already laid or chasing has been done to install the standard setup.

This is a renovation, so the basic electrical work is included in the unit price here.

All standard Gira equipment including wiring:

From that perspective, I don’t think this is expensive... I had to pay an extra 50€ to the general contractor on top of the standard electrical work — back in 2013!

All prices net,

Are you sure? Or is it gross? You are the end customer after all…

Unit prices usually appear net in a quotation; the 19% value-added tax (VAT) for private end consumers is added only at the end.

Most of the wiring is already in place, or channels have been routed to install the standard setup.
And which routing would we use if I want an outlet 2 meters (6.5 feet) further? Sure, maybe he can put two more outlets on one circuit breaker, but otherwise, he doesn’t really save much, especially not work.

Anyway. I just wanted to give a price estimate. Unfortunately, I can’t contribute more on that.

The electrician is using a mixed calculation method here. How else could it be done? How long should the client wait for the quote if every service is billed separately (surface-mounted wiring, concealed wiring, wiring in conduits, wiring in suspended ceilings, switch boxes in masonry, concrete, or stud walls)? It’s similar when it comes to measurements. I would like to see the discussions with the client when the billing is done. Of course, the electrician earns a bit more on a double socket than on a single socket. However, it is not uncommon for him to actually lose money on a single socket, depending on where the client wants it.[/I]
