Hello everyone,

I hope I have posted this request in the correct section of the forum...

I have the following problem/task.

Due to the local situation, my curb gutter in front of the garage is below street level. For this reason, connecting to the public stormwater system is not feasible, because during heavy rainfall, water from the public system would flow back out of the gutter onto my property.

As an alternative, I plan to direct the water into a cistern and use it for garden irrigation. The overflow is intended to infiltrate on-site within the property boundaries.

My question is: since my car is parked in the driveway and there is tire wear and brake dust present, these “contaminants” would enter the cistern. Are there any options to filter out this fine dust, tire and brake abrasion, etc., so that I do not ultimately introduce these substances into my garden?

Furthermore, I would be interested to hear how you would handle this situation if you do not want to use the water and the last curb gutter is below street level.

Thanks for your feedback.

Kind regards,
Florian

I’m not exactly an environmental zealot, but I would simply overlook the tire and brake wear on your driveway. Unless you’re changing oil on the driveway every week, the level of contamination is so low that it won’t significantly affect your plants when you water them.

How do you clean your garden from all the other particles/dust/dirt in the air? You don’t. It’s the same with rainwater collected in a cistern.

P.S. How do you get so much tire and brake wear on your driveway? Are you doing Ken Block-style drifting in your yard?

People also call my yard the Donut Workshop.

No, seriously, I’m probably just being overly cautious again, as usual...
