Hello everyone, I have a fairly specific question about the care and durability of the KALLAX furniture series from IKEA: Do the white inserts in the KALLAX shelving unit really get noticeably dirty faster compared to other colors or materials? I am particularly interested in how the material feels to the touch, how visible dirt such as dust, fingerprints, or stains is, and how well these marks can be removed without damaging the material. Does anyone have concrete experience or perhaps tips on how to keep white KALLAX inserts clean for as long as possible? Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Hey Nikolayli, great question! I’ve had white KALLAX inserts in my living room for over a year now. And yes, they definitely show dirt faster than the darker colors, especially if you have children or pets. Dust is really noticeable right away, and fingerprints and small stains stand out much more. But the good thing is that the inserts are easy to clean with a damp cloth and a mild cleaner. Regular wiping really helps, so they always look fresh. I think it’s a bit more maintenance, but the light color just brings a really fresh feel to the room! So don’t worry, with a little care, they stay looking great :-)

I would like to go into more detail about the material of the white KALLAX inserts in this context: The white inserts are mainly made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) with a white melamine coating. This surface is smooth and glossy on the front, which unfortunately means that dust, dirt, and fingerprints become visible quickly. Melamine is relatively resistant to scratches and moisture, but it is not completely impervious to oily fingers or permanent stains.

An important point is also the porosity of the surface: While the melamine coating is dense, it generally attracts more dirt than similarly colored but matte plastic materials, which is often the case with KALLAX frames made of wood-based materials.

Regarding whether they get dirty faster – yes, compared to darker wood finishes or black-brown colors, every small spot of dirt is much more noticeable on white surfaces. So, if you have children or often handle greasy hands, you should either clean more frequently or consider alternatives.

I am curious how often you or others actually clean such inserts. Is it considered too time-consuming, or does it work well when done regularly?

Here, I would like to raise a critical question: Are we sure that the material of the white KALLAX inserts actually causes a higher level of soiling, or could the perception simply be that light-colored surfaces generally show dirt more clearly?

From my point of view, it is important to distinguish carefully: When placing two inserts of different materials or colors side by side, light surfaces definitely draw more attention to small spots of dirt – which creates the impression that they get dirty faster or more heavily, even though it may just be an increase in contrast.

Are there any reliable experiences regarding how resistant the melamine coating really is to frequent cleaning with various cleaning agents?

If cleaning needs to be done more intensively on a regular basis, the durability of the material is a key factor that must be given more consideration. Otherwise, it is of little use if the white piece looks nice at first but has to be replaced frequently.

I am curious to hear if anyone has solid long-term experience!
