Hello everyone,

We have the opportunity to buy a plot of land that is 22m (72 feet) wide and 65m (213 feet) long. It is a north-facing lot. How do you usually approach a situation like this? Do you position the house towards the back or the front?

I have uploaded a few pictures for better understanding. The map excerpt is oriented north.

One important criterion for us is "maximum sunlight." Where should the main entrance be located? How can we create a southwest-facing terrace?

Thank you and best regards,
Max

That's what narrow strips of land are for.
Better to have only an easement. Cutting off a narrow strip of land from a 22m (72 feet) "width" parcel to create a separate plot is hardly enjoyable.

I put together a proposal for a friend who has a north-facing plot.
What a waste of space and such fragmentation of the garden.

I would also position the house as far forward as possible and place the terrace at the back. That way, you get nice shade. For cooler days, you can then create a separate seating area in the rear garden... ah, lovely... I wish I had that too. Here, there was only enough space for a south-facing terrace, which is nice in winter but gets too hot for me even in an average summer.

What bothers me about this is that the living rooms and the larger windows would have to be planned facing north.

Why does it bother you?
It offers a great view.

Ours are slightly northwest-facing. You only rarely need shading.

Why does the living room have to face north? It could be on the southeast side, right?

Well, she wanted to create different zones in the garden for various uses, such as a run for chickens and growing her own fruits and vegetables.
A west-facing terrace (or south-facing) was also highly desired, which I can understand.
The plot turned out to be quite large and long because smaller ones were not available in that development area.
It was only meant as an example for the original poster.
