Hello everyone,

The last lawn seeding has sprouted, the shrubs are planted and hopefully holding up well despite the continuous rain.
So far, because of my parents-in-law’s landscaping business, we have only used gasoline-powered tools in the garden. Gradually, these are wearing out due to age, and in our private garden we only need a ride-on mower now.
However, it doesn’t reach cleanly along the edges of the terrace or around the shrubs. Therefore, we are looking for a battery-powered grass edger.
We already have a trimmer, but I don’t like using it that much, especially since I still have to clean up the paths afterwards.

Which of you have a battery-operated grass edger that can also handle thicker clumps? So far, we have looked at Bosch and Gardena models at the hardware store. They say nothing beats Makita’s. What are your experiences?

We received a Ryobi cordless electric shear as a gift. It worked quite well when it was really sharp, but after about a year, pulling up grass is almost faster. I haven’t figured out yet how to properly disassemble it to sharpen it again. That’s why I’ve just switched back to a corded electric trimmer.

Same here... The cordless shear I bought had to be replaced by a cordless trimmer. It just wasn’t efficient enough, and small stones kept jamming the cutting mechanism.

That doesn't sound very encouraging.

I borrowed a Gardena from my neighbor and I have one from Bosch myself. They are quite similar. They work, but not always as well as you might expect beforehand, especially when trimming higher areas.

I'm still undecided about trimmers. They offer efficiency but come at the cost of creating a mess. I wouldn’t use a cheap one here either. I once borrowed a low-cost model and ended up spending more time winding and untangling the string than actually trimming.

Maybe I’ll just stick with a traditional grass shear after all.

Depending on the amount of lawn edges to be trimmed and around the shrubs, if it is quite a lot like in our case, using hand shears is many times more time-consuming than sweeping up the debris from the trimming.
