Dear forum members,

Before building our new house, we plan to install a two-level platform and have chosen Rinn modular steps.

Is it necessary to apply a layer between the concrete and the exterior plaster (such as a vapor barrier) to prevent moisture transfer or similar issues? Or can the steps be installed directly, and if so, should any gaps be sealed afterward?

Additionally, the RINN consultant advised us to definitely check with the general contractor who built our house, as there might be requirements related to warranty conditions or similar. I had not heard of this before— is this common practice?

Thank you very much for your answers!

I’ll start from the end: The general contractor (GC) built the house, including the facade. You want to connect to this facade now. There is a possibility that the facade could be damaged when installing the steps. Naturally, the GC wants to exclude any liability for that.

The steps will be installed up to a 5mm (0.2 inches) gap. For added security, I would recommend applying a double layer of waterproofing slurry to the relevant base area. When installing the steps, it might be helpful to place something between the step and the house wall (e.g., an edge insulation profile). Seal the joints with quartz sand or use silicone for the wall connection. There are special products designed for exterior use.
