Hello everyone,

I’ve been struggling for months with the question of how to color our old farmhouse. My image searches haven’t really helped. Our roof is covered with natural red clay tiles. We also want wooden windows and have an old front door that we plan to refresh. I’ve considered painting the front door in a different color than the windows. Does anyone have ideas, pictures, etc., on how to create a harmonious color scheme for the house (roof, windows, door, facade)? I definitely don’t want a white or gray house, and the colors should naturally suit the old building (so no bright or flashy tones).

I’m grateful for any advice. Oh, and I just noticed… window sills come in many different colors.

Thanks to everyone!

Here, doors and shutters are traditionally iron oxide red. However, I spend enough time on Pinterest to come across other ideas as well. Have a look at Farrow & Ball colors.

In our village, there are only five other houses, and all of them have that typical gray plaster from the former East Germany. They also have concrete bricks. The neighboring villages mostly feature newer houses in white, gray, and yellow. I’m looking into taupe, beige, and similar tones. I’ve also considered painting the doors and windows red. That would definitely be something different for our region. 🙂

Even if Michael forgot to shoot in color, just show what kind of house we are actually talking about. It’s probably not so ugly that the camera would break, but more importantly: which part should actually be painted? That’s hard to discuss just by talking. ;-)

As mentioned, a lot depends on the style of the house. We have an old farmhouse here, painted in a subtle—how should I put it—“antique green,” with white window frames. I really find that charming. Of course, that’s just my personal taste. I could also easily imagine an antique blue/taupe color for houses that have seen a few owners over the years. Quick & dirty Photoshop:

Two windows on green and blue walls, both with white frames.

Many of the older houses in our area are painted light green, with white windows and sandstone basements. Some of the even older houses are partially painted in a light blue color.

Dark red works very well as an accent color with beige 🙂

Add some pictures and don’t worry so much. You CAN still make changes, unlike some people here 😀
I also live in Saxony now, and at first, the gray houses made me feel down, but by now I barely notice it. When I drive back to my old home in Baden-Württemberg, I see more old, unattractive houses than I did before. It’s all a matter of perspective.
Based on what I often see, without a picture I’d guess a warm but strong color would often fit well. Nothing too bright, but definitely bold.
Don’t hesitate to post a picture, then you’ll get good advice.
