ᐅ Color design of the staircase in the living area, choice of materials

Our staircase will be located in the open space/gallery area and will likely be a quarter-turn steel stringer or folded plate staircase. Since it will be positioned in the middle of the room, it should also be visually appealing.

The stairs connect to solid wood floorboards made of pine or possibly larch or Douglas fir on both the ground floor and the upper floor, which we might stain darker.

However, there is a meeting of different materials and colors at both transitions to the floor. The risk is that the color tone will only be an approximate match, so we are considering choosing something "completely different."

Are there any ideas regarding this "problem" of clashing colors/materials? A steel staircase might be less comfortable to walk on, and a rustic steel staircase with diamond plate or similar looks stylish but might be too dominant in a not very large open-plan space.

Perhaps someone has pictures or ideas...

I don’t want to go overboard, but from my perspective, these are all interesting options.

Modern interior view with a cantilevered wooden staircase next to a gray wall; kitchen area on the right.

Interior with dark wooden staircase, semicircular wall niche with terracotta jars, window above.

Modern metal spiral staircase with wooden steps, railing in front of a stone wall (two views).

Spiral concrete staircase with rough, dusty surface in gray stone look.

@manohara Thanks for your effort; I hope the dentist managed to save your last tooth. Unfortunately, mine didn’t make it. 🤨. Of course, functionality and usability are our main priorities, so as often, it’s a search for the all-in-one perfect solution 😀
The staircase is positioned against the wall but almost in the middle of the room, making it quite dominant. We do like some stair designs, but they get ruled out due to the busy top view. In principle, it will probably be something simpler, plus (unfortunately) we have to stick to the ceiling height provided by the supplier, which is one of the downsides of not having a completely “free” build. But that’s just how it is, and there are also advantages we have deliberately chosen with this.
A sleek metal staircase would probably be my first choice, but it has its drawbacks when it comes to walking comfort.
It’s becoming clearer that we will likely go for a strong color contrast rather than matching a similar wood tone. We were thinking more along those lines, where a certain type of wood was stained black.

Modern interior: floating black staircase, large glass windows, and cowhide rug.

We might also like something with dark wood.

Modern wooden stair treads with glass railing in a bright, open hallway and grey floor.

Or something like this:

Modern staircase with wooden treads and grey side wall, wall lights, plant, and decorative sphere.

And no, you’re not overdoing it; it’s fun to look at special things.

@Climbee Yes, I thought the same, but the stone feels a bit too “cold” for us, even though it would be a good contrast also in terms of material. I’m not very fond of synthetic materials, even if technically almost anything can be done with them.

If you have some extra budget, I would take a look at a bronze staircase. The material suits any interior style, and the oxidation creates a unique work of art.

Very cool – but the price probably reflects that as well...

But at the same time, it is also an investment due to the highly traded bronze price :p :p :p
If you're ever short on cash, just cut off a few steps :p

Good idea, I’ve also thought about weathered steel among my countless considerations. We like this lighter type better—that’s the advantage of steel. If it were up to me, I’d even go without a railing, but others worry about me or my potentially unsteady future walk.
We have endless funds… what else 🤨.
No, but honestly, for a stylish staircase in the living room, I would quite willingly give up a garage completely or delay plastering it for two years as a cost-saving measure. I like to have things in my living space that I enjoy seeing.
