Hello,

the range of staircases is very large, and we don’t like the yellow-orange colored beech staircases so much. Which staircase did you choose, and are you satisfied with it?

Best regards,
Sabine

We are going to cover our concrete staircase with a designer surface in "knotty oak" style.

So, vinyl or something similar? We had considered that as well because we want to install vinyl flooring in the upstairs hallway. Our staircase will also be concrete; we don’t like tiles or granite and prefer something with a wood look. Could you tell me if covering it with a designer floor is more affordable than using real wood?

Yes, exactly, vinyl, called Wineo Honey Wood XL600, I believe.
I had a quote for real wood, and it almost shocked me. So I can't give you exact numbers since the staircase is only about to be started, but I think it will be cheaper than real wood.

Thank you! We have received a quote for our staircase in natural mixed beech. We do not yet have a quote for other types of wood, but it definitely will not be natural mixed beech. So, additional charges may apply. Includes handrail (no balustrade) and risers. Price: €3,900.

How satisfied are you with its resistance to scratches and dents?

A staircase is a functional item. Of course, you try to handle it carefully, but minor dents and scratches are inevitable. However, you will usually find these more on the stringers than on the treads (excluding stiletto heels on the stairs).

how much would walnut have cost more?

I can’t give you an exact figure, but for a simple walnut staircase, it probably wouldn’t have been less than a five-digit amount. However, we didn’t pursue that any further.
From what I recall, our current staircase cost between 4,000 and 5,000 euros (€).

Even after 2.5 years, I still find our dark-stained staircase very elegant. The only downside is that the dark wood combined with a tall window in the background makes it very prone to showing dust, and it is quite slippery. After slipping twice in the beginning, we finally decided to add non-slip strips after some back and forth. We didn’t want to cover the stairs with the usual carpet runners because we felt it would spoil the look.

@Curly,
I don’t want to shock you, but €4,000–5,000 (about $4,300–5,400) isn’t really expensive... it can easily go much higher. Just for the selection phase, we paid over €5,000 (about $5,400) extra for our staircase. It spans three floors and is a landing staircase with stainless steel bolts. So you can easily pay €5,000 (about $5,400) per floor for the stairs.
We really didn’t want a spiral beechwood stringer staircase at any cost. That would have been included in the general contractor package.

You get what you pay for...

Best regards,

Andreas
