Hello everyone,

I recently bought two Billy bookcases from Ikea and wonder if it is really possible to assemble this furniture safely and correctly without the included instruction manual. I have heard different opinions on this—some say the manual is mainly necessary because of the correct sequence and safety considerations, while others believe that due to the relatively simple construction, assembly is easily done without it.

I am especially interested in whether you have experience with potential pitfalls or safety issues that might be overlooked by a non-professional when assembling without instructions. Are there critical tips or details that should definitely be kept in mind? Or is the risk rather low once you have familiarized yourself with the materials?

I look forward to your assessments and advice!

Billy shelves are really simple in design. The instructions are especially helpful for the assembly order.

You can manage without the instructions, but it’s best to proceed step by step and carefully check all parts.

That is a very valid question. In principle, the Billy cabinet is modular and relatively simple to customize, but skipping the instructions carries certain risks. For example, it is not always immediately clear which side panel should face up or down – the pre-drilled holes for the shelves can be a key indicator here. Incorrect orientation can cause the shelves to be uneven or unstable. Also, attaching the back panel, which provides stability, should be done in the specified order to prevent warping.

Furthermore, proper anchoring to the wall is a crucial safety aspect. The instructions specify which anchors and screws are suitable depending on the wall material. Without these guidelines, there is a risk that the shelves could tip over or fall.

It would be interesting to know how you plan to secure the shelves and what tools you will use. This way, potential hazards can be addressed more effectively.

Without instructions, it is difficult to recognize the correct sequence. This can result in poor stability.

I recommend downloading at least a PDF of the manual to avoid any unnecessary issues.

The construction of a Billy shelf is relatively simple but not entirely self-explanatory. The instructions ensure that the shelves are placed in the correct positions and the back panel is properly attached.

Without this guidance, the shelf may sometimes perform poorly because the load is not distributed optimally. An important safety aspect is that shelves should generally be secured against tipping, especially for taller units or when children are present in the household.

In conclusion: Those with DIY skills and good spatial awareness can manage without instructions but should pay attention to stability and wall mounting.

Thanks in advance for the feedback!

So far, I have only unpacked the shelves; the tools are ready (screwdriver, cordless drill). Wall mounting is definitely an important aspect for me – we have a concrete wall, so the right anchors should be used.

That’s exactly what I’m worried about, because I have the parts here, but the holes are on several sides, and it’s not always immediately clear how the assembly should be done most effectively. Do you have specific tips regarding the orientation of the side panels or the back panel?

One more question: Is it better to insert all screws loosely first before fully tightening them, in case some adjustments are needed?
