Hello everyone,
I recently bought two Billy bookcases from Ikea and wonder if it is really possible to assemble this furniture safely and correctly without the included instruction manual. I have heard different opinions on this—some say the manual is mainly necessary because of the correct sequence and safety considerations, while others believe that due to the relatively simple construction, assembly is easily done without it.
I am especially interested in whether you have experience with potential pitfalls or safety issues that might be overlooked by a non-professional when assembling without instructions. Are there critical tips or details that should definitely be kept in mind? Or is the risk rather low once you have familiarized yourself with the materials?
I look forward to your assessments and advice!

Do you have specific tips for orienting the side panels or the back panel?Yes, here are some important notes:
1. Side panels: The holes for the shelves usually run parallel along the sides. Make sure all holes on both sides are at the same height. The front edge of the side panels is often less deep than the back edge – this creates the characteristic profile.
2. Back panel: It is attached to the sides only with thin nails or small screws. The back panel must be completely flush and straight; otherwise, the cabinet will warp. Usually, there are notches or cutouts on the back panel to help position it correctly.
3. Installing screws loosely: Highly recommended! Especially for furniture like the Billy, you should insert all screws first without tightening them fully. This way, you can make small adjustments later and avoid strain.
A small pitfall: Some parts come in multiples (e.g., shelves) and can vary in load capacity – pay attention to which ones are meant for the lower levels and which for the upper levels.
Feel free to ask more questions, I know it can be really frustrating without instructions.
I can confirm that many people manage without instructions, but it requires patience and careful attention. However, the manual is not only helpful for assembly but also important for safety, especially when attaching to the wall.
If you don’t have a paper manual, you can find it online as a PDF on the Ikea website – the illustrated steps make it much easier to get the alignment and order right.
Here are a few general tips:
- Always work on a clean, flat surface to avoid damage.
- Check all parts beforehand for damage and completeness.
- When using the wall mounting kit, use the appropriate wall plugs for your wall type.
Good luck, and feel free to ask if you get stuck at any point!

I also securely mounted the shelf to the wall using the appropriate screws. It’s really important not to overtighten the screws to avoid splitting the wood.
Go for it – it’s fantastic when you can save some effort and still end up with a sturdy piece of furniture! 🙂

Anyone working entirely without instructions should pay special attention to correctly installing the back panel. It significantly contributes to the overall stability.
Once you have the back panel, simply fix it from the outside with small nails and make sure it is perfectly aligned.
Otherwise, the shelf may tip over.
