ᐅ Buying and Selling Heat Pumps Privately

Dear all,

I am currently facing a delivery issue with my heat pump (Vaillant Arotherm Plus VWL 75/6), which is not available from any dealer and according to the manufacturer will likely only be delivered in calendar week 6 of 2022. With winter approaching and my heating technician now using his instantaneous water heater at another customer’s place, the situation is becoming quite problematic. He is offering me a 5 kW (kilowatt) fan heater as a temporary solution, but I’m concerned that this will lead to very high energy costs.

For this reason, I have come up with the idea of getting a readily available monoblock heat pump to use just as a temporary measure until my Vaillant arrives. There seems to be a Panasonic model (probably from the series of the well-known and widely recommended “Geisha”) which appears to be suitable and is available at a reasonable price (around 3500 EUR). I would then resell it afterwards.

However, since the market for used heat pumps is rather small, I wonder whether this will really be cheaper than heating electrically with direct heating for three months. I have roughly calculated that in the worst case, I would have to expect heating costs of 2500-3000 EUR with electric direct heating (depending on extent and weather conditions).

Does anyone here have experience with this?

@Benutzer200, if I remember correctly, you once installed a Panasonic unit? Did you happen to sell it later on?

Well, I hope someone has faced a similar problem and can share their experience.

Kind regards

Tolentino

No. I have the same tower and therefore the same storage tank. The heat pump is the unit outside. That part is not available to me.
I just want to get a different heat pump now and wonder if it can also heat the domestic hot water from the Vaillant tower storage tank, or if that only works if it "speaks Vaillant"...

The online discount retailers all mention a delivery time of 4-6 weeks, if I’m not mistaken. There should also be two units available from a dealer on an online auction site. Couldn't your sanitary professional just "simply" buy them there to ensure customer satisfaction? As long as they receive a VAT invoice, there shouldn’t be any accounting issues—only possibly with the warranty?

That was the case for me.
The planned Zehnder controlled ventilation system for living spaces was suddenly not expected to be available until May 2022, so they wanted to install a "household unit" instead. Online, I found a dealer who had 18 units in stock. Suddenly, things started moving, and three weeks later the Zehnder system arrived.
It was similar with the bricks; they suddenly said it would be December because there were supposedly no bricks left in Germany... 🤨. After 20 minutes, I had found different bricks in stock at the local building materials supplier, especially since I didn’t have many specific requirements for the bricks.
@Tolentino It’s worth trying to search online for the exact device you need, where it’s actually in stock, and then share these results with your contractor.
I had the same experience with wood and wood fiber insulation... I think some tradespeople just stick to their usual ordering channels, even though they could apply their margin just the same elsewhere.

The online retailers don’t have these items immediately available either. Apparently, the approach is not to keep all products physically in stock but to list the wholesaler’s inventory plus a 2 business day delivery time. That’s exactly what I did. My heating engineer agreed, and once the payment (prepayment only) was made, I was informed that the item was actually not with the wholesaler. I then contacted two other suppliers, but each time I was told the item was not at the wholesaler (and certainly not in their own warehouse) and that it could take 2–3 weeks.

However, this applies only in normal times. In the current supply crisis, the usual processes no longer work.

Hello Tolentino,
What is the current status of your heat pump and domestic hot water system? I am also waiting for my Arotherm 35/6; the heating technician ordered the heat pump from the wholesaler at the end of September. Unfortunately, I don’t have a delivery date yet. As a temporary solution, my heating engineer suggested keeping the Hotboy running after the screed has dried, with a fixed flow temperature of 25°C (77°F). This way, we can keep our 90 sqm (970 sq ft) bungalow comfortably warm. Now the painter and floor installer are starting their work. Our goal was to move in by the end of January. The general contractor suggested that the Hotboy could continue to be used and that domestic hot water could be supplied via an 80-liter (21-gallon) hot water tank. Of course, the heating engineer expects to be paid for this interim solution...
Your post gave me the idea to reconsider using the 190-liter (50-gallon) Unitower, which is part of our construction contract, and to skip installing the 80-liter hot water tank.
How is your domestic hot water system coming along? Is the 190-liter Vaillant Unitower available? How are you heating your house currently, and when do you plan to move in?
Thanks in advance!

Hi,
Unfortunately, no updates from my side.
My tankless water heater had to be moved to another construction site. If you’re allowed to keep it until the heat pump is delivered, I’d recommend accepting that offer.
At the moment, I’m heating with a fan heater and infrared panels; over the weekend, the temperature only reached about 10–11°C (50–52°F).
The tower has been installed here from the very beginning, and apparently, there haven’t been any major issues with it. Unfortunately, the tower alone can’t heat anything. Initially, I thought that since the heating element is inside it, I could heat everything through that, but according to Vaillant, that’s not possible.
Then I came up with the idea of using the Panasonic unit as a temporary solution.
However, my installer mentioned the priority list that I seem to be on. That gave me some hope of getting one soon.
Now it’s almost worse than waiting until February, when I had planned the temporary setup. This way, I don’t know if the effort is worth it because Vaillant’s unit could suddenly arrive any day now...
I don’t know if the tower alone can provide just hot water; it definitely can’t provide space heating.
