Hello everyone!
Before we sow our lawn, I would like to create a few gravel beds.

I’m thinking of edging the beds facing the lawn with a runner made of paving stones (20x10x8 cm [8x4x3 inches]).

Is that possible? How should the base for the stones be prepared? Would compacted bedding sand be sufficient? The stones should end up level with the final turf and gravel bed height.

I wanted to avoid the tedious work of setting curbstones...

Think carefully about using gravel beds; after a few years, they often don't look as good anymore.

I bordered our trees with granite and set them directly into the soil; even after 2 years it still looks clean.

But if you want to do it properly, dig out about 20cm (8 inches). Use a sand and screed mixture and firmly tap the stones in. Fill any gaps with the same material; it will last a very long time.

I’m also in the Facebook group. Sure, there are extreme examples, but many are just exaggerated.
