Hello, my husband and I recently bought an end-of-terrace house built in 1971.

In one room, there was wooden paneling covering the wall up to about halfway. We have now removed it and discovered this black adhesive-like substance.

What is it, and could it possibly contain asbestos?

The interior masonry is not plastered but covered with drywall. The black substance is on the drywall.

Thank you very much
Corner scene: Black wall with flakes, wooden dresser on the left, cables on the floor.

Only a test can tell you that. It cannot be ruled out by remote assessment, especially given the age.

What is the best way to remove this adhesive? Should I sand it off? Soften it somehow or remove the lower part of the drywall? The drywall panels are attached with cement? Spot-fixed.
Thanks in advance!!

What is your goal?

P.S. If asbestos is present, any action is extremely dangerous and sanding it off is equivalent to a suicide attempt.
