TuteteHello everyone, I have a question and hope to get your experiences and tips: Are there any cleaning tips that specifically help protect the surface of IKEA Hemnes furniture?
My Hemnes dresser has a painted or slightly smooth wood surface, and I have noticed that small scratches or dull spots appear quickly if I clean too harshly or use unsuitable cleaning products.
I’m particularly interested in which products you use to gently clean Hemnes furniture, whether you recommend certain cloths or cleaning procedures, and how to treat tougher stains without damaging or wearing down the surface.
Does anyone have practical tips or proven methods to keep the surface looking good over the long term? Thanks in advance!

Hi Tutete,
great to see you approaching this topic so thoroughly! 😀 The Hemnes finish is really attractive but also quite sensitive if you’re not careful. I usually clean it with a soft, slightly damp microfiber cloth – that’s generally enough. Avoid abrasive sponges or scouring agents as they can unnecessarily scratch the wood.
As for cleaning agents, I like to use a mild dishwashing detergent, heavily diluted in water – it gently neutralizes many types of dirt. If you wring out the cloth well so it’s only barely damp, you can prevent water spots.
For stubborn stains, I first try a mix of water and a little vinegar – but use it very sparingly and test cautiously in an inconspicuous spot, as vinegar can be too harsh!
The most important thing is really patience and gentle handling, the Hemnes finish doesn’t like rough treatment 😉 Good luck with the care!

To complement the previous tips:
The surface of the Hemnes furniture is usually made of painted wood, which provides some resistance to water and dirt but is still sensitive to harsh substances.
- Avoid using strong solvents or alcohol-based cleaners, as these can dissolve or dull the paint.
- A soft microfiber cloth with lukewarm water is ideal for daily cleaning.
- Avoid abrasive sponges or scrubbing cleansers that can scratch the surface.
- For tougher stains, a very mild soap solution (neutral pH) can be used.
Important: After cleaning, wipe the surface dry with a cloth to prevent moisture damage and water spots.
I agree with this recommendation, as mechanical stress from rubbing can damage the paint.
Prevention measures such as using protective pads, keeping a distance from moist appliances or hot dishes also help reduce damage.

I’d like to share my experience as well, since I own a Hemnes dresser and have experimented quite a bit.
First, a tip:
- Regularly dust lightly, as fine dust can cause scratches when wiping later.
- I use a soft cotton cloth for cleaning, not a microfiber cloth, because microfibers can sometimes leave small residues.
- For stubborn stains, I use a mixture of warm water and a few drops of mild hand soap, which usually does the trick.
This is a very important tip! I made the mistake of wiping too wet once, and the surface got slightly stained.
I’ve also had good results with furniture care products based on beeswax, which offer some protection to the finish and visually revive the wood. But please test first on an inconspicuous area!
Hope this helps, and good luck caring for your Hemnes furniture!
