Hello everyone,

I have a specific question regarding the care of Ikea Hemnes wooden furniture. I understand that these wooden pieces are often oiled or lacquered, which means their surfaces require appropriate treatment. Now, I’m wondering: Are there sustainable care products that are specially designed for the finishes of these HEMNES wooden furniture? Products that are eco-friendly, free of harsh chemicals, and at the same time gently clean and maintain the furniture surface? I don’t want to just use any conventional cleaning products and risk damaging the quality finish or compromising the sustainability of my furniture.

Perhaps someone has experience with certain brands or home remedies that work well? I look forward to your answers!

Hello wilhelm10,

I completely understand your concerns, especially when it comes to wooden surfaces where you need to be careful with cleaning products to avoid damaging the material. To answer your question: Yes, there are indeed sustainable care products you can use for HEMNES furniture. It is important that they are based on natural ingredients and free from solvents and harsh chemicals.

A good example would be care oils made from plant-based oils such as linseed oil or walnut oil, which refresh and protect the wood surface at the same time. Make sure the products contain no synthetic fragrances or preservatives, as this is better for both the environment and your health.

For cleaning, I generally recommend a damp cloth with a few drops of natural soap, such as castile soap. Wipe gently and then dry by rubbing. Avoid harsh cleaners or alcohol-based solutions.

If you want to be extra cautious, you can also use natural wax products. These are often nourishing and give the wood a nice patina without heavy chemical exposure.

I hope this helps!

I find this question very interesting because it is often claimed that sustainable care products are an alternative to conventional ones – but unfortunately, there is hardly any solid evidence of how well they actually work on lacquered wood surfaces like those of HEMNES.

That sounds plausible at first, but the question arises as to how these oils interact with an already treated furniture surface. For lacquered surfaces, for example, they could cause stains or discoloration – since the surface is no longer open-pored like untreated wood.

Furthermore, manufacturers of supposedly sustainable products often lack transparent information: Are these really free of problematic additives or just “greenwashed”? If anyone has deeper experience with specific products, it would be very welcome. Otherwise, I would recommend relying on manufacturer information and product tests before applying anything to the furniture piece.

Hello everyone,

to address the critical points raised by janeo: Generally, I would first check whether the furniture surface is painted or oiled. For the HEMNES series, Ikea states that many surfaces are painted, which means that maintenance oils are actually unnecessary and can even cause damage.

In such cases, I recommend mild cleaners, preferably water- and soap-based, that do not leave any residue. Cleaning with a soft cloth and minimal moisture is often sufficient.

Different standards apply to oiled surfaces, where plant-based oils or wax products can be quite useful.

Finding sustainable products can sometimes be difficult, but there are always ecological options among household cleaners, often also in organic quality. Important: Even a sustainable product is useless if applied incorrectly.

If desired, I can gladly provide specific examples from my collection of sustainable cleaners and care products.

I find this topic very important because many of us associate sustainability not only with production but also with proper care and extending the lifespan of furniture. Some time ago, I bought an Ikea HEMNES cabinet with a lacquered surface. At first, I used common cleaning products, but I quickly realized that I didn’t like the idea of using harsh chemicals.

Therefore, I started using very mild, natural care products and even tried home remedies like a very diluted mixture of water and white vinegar for cleaning. It is important to always wipe down afterwards with clean water and dry the furniture to avoid damaging the surface.

For me, sustainability also means taking good care of my furniture so it stays looking nice for a long time. I am aware that not all home remedies are suitable for every surface, so I use them cautiously. If anyone has experience with specific sustainable care products for lacquered HEMNES furniture, I would be very interested to hear about it.
