Hello everyone,

I am planning to mount a large IKEA BESTÅ shelving unit on the wall and want to make sure that the screws and anchors used are optimal for both the wall material and the load capacity. When mounting in older buildings with mostly solid masonry or sometimes drywall, a few questions arise:

- Which types of anchors are recommended for concrete, brick, or drywall respectively?
- What screw size and length should be used to ensure a secure load-bearing connection?
- Are there any specific recommendations for installing IKEA BESTÅ furniture that should be considered?

My question is therefore quite specific: Are there proven recommendations on which screws and anchors are particularly suitable for safely mounting IKEA BESTÅ furniture on the wall, depending on the wall type and load? I look forward to your experiences and tips!

I once mounted a BESTÅ unit on a drywall using regular wall plugs – that was a mistake. After a short time, it almost slipped down. Since then, I only use toggle bolts, which hold much better.

I was also unsure about the screw length to use. A screw set from a home improvement store brand with a recommendation worked well: 60 mm (2.4 inches) length and 5 mm (0.2 inches) diameter. My advice is to choose screws that are slightly larger rather than too small.

I also find it helpful to secure shelves at more than just two points, depending on the width: this distributes the weight better and makes the installation more stable.

Finally, a note on safety: the security of the mounting depends not only on the type of anchors and screw size but also on proper installation. Anchors must be installed correctly, and the hole should be drilled to the right size—not too large or too small.

For wall mounting IKEA BESTÅ units, it is recommended to use:
- Anchors suitable for the wall material (metal frame anchors for hollow walls, heavy-duty anchors for brick or concrete)
- Screws with a diameter of at least 5–6 mm (0.2–0.24 inches) and a length of 60 to 80 mm (2.4 to 3.1 inches), depending on the wall and furniture thickness

In addition, the number of attachment points is crucial. A BESTÅ tall cabinet should be secured at a minimum of three points, while a wide sideboard requires four or more points.
