Hello everyone,

I have a question that has been on my mind lately: Are there any issues if IKEA Hemnes furniture is exposed to direct sunlight?

Specifically, I am wondering if the wooden furniture might fade due to UV rays, develop cracks, or warp. The surface could also be affected, possibly showing discoloration or a changed texture from intense heat and light.

I have read that wood can generally be sensitive to UV exposure, but how do the materials and finishes used in Hemnes furniture behave, especially the painted or waxed parts?

If anyone has personal experience or knows of studies or customer reviews, I would really appreciate your insights. Are there any special precautions to take when placing the furniture in a room with a lot of sunlight?

Thanks in advance and best regards!

Hey klokau!

I can only speak from my own experience: yes, direct sunlight can affect Hemnes furniture! In my case, the wardrobe has faded a bit more on the side facing the window after a few years compared to the other areas – this is especially noticeable when you look at it closely.

The finish doesn’t get damaged immediately, but the color definitely changes. 🙂

Tip: If possible, use curtains or blinds to minimize the damage.

But nothing drastic, no cracks or anything like that for me. Just a bit of patience and caution when dealing with sunlight.

Good luck with your project!

Hemnes furniture is mostly made of solid wood, which does not tolerate UV exposure well. Fading is typical. Cracks are rather rare unless there is extreme heat.

Regarding Hemnes furniture and direct sunlight exposure:

- Hemnes furniture is made from solid pine wood, which naturally reacts to UV rays.
- UV rays can cause fading and may gradually damage the finish.
- Heat buildup from direct sunlight can cause the wood to warp slightly, especially if humidity levels fluctuate.
- Cracks are possible but are more likely caused by changing temperature and humidity conditions rather than sunlight alone.

Recommendation:
- Avoid direct sunlight whenever possible.
- Use curtains or UV-protective window films for protection.
- Occasionally rotate the furniture, if possible, to prevent uneven fading.

These are the key points to prevent damage proactively.

That’s a really good question, because I’ve also noticed that my Hemnes bed has become a bit lighter on the side facing the window. I find that unfortunate, as you want to keep your furniture looking nice for a long time.

Often you wonder if you did something wrong or if it’s just normal. It’s reassuring to know I’m not the only one seeing these changes. It’s a material that reacts to sunlight, which makes it a bit emotional. You kind of associate memories with your furniture...

Maybe someone has tips on how to better handle this or how to protect the furniture well?

I’m a bit concerned, too, because I want to preserve the appearance for many years.

Absolutely understandable, I’ve experienced the same. It’s upsetting when you invest in good furniture and then see how the sun changes it.

I have tried caring for my Hemnes dresser with furniture wax and regular treatment. This makes the surface feel better, but it doesn’t fully protect against fading.

For me, it also means a degree of acceptance – furniture naturally evolves and changes over time. Getting upset usually just leads to stress. Maybe this mindset can help others too.

Still, some protection against intense UV exposure would be desirable, especially for high-quality wooden furniture like Hemnes.
