Hello everyone,
I have a question that has been on my mind lately: Are there any issues if IKEA Hemnes furniture is exposed to direct sunlight?
Specifically, I am wondering if the wooden furniture might fade due to UV rays, develop cracks, or warp. The surface could also be affected, possibly showing discoloration or a changed texture from intense heat and light.
I have read that wood can generally be sensitive to UV exposure, but how do the materials and finishes used in Hemnes furniture behave, especially the painted or waxed parts?
If anyone has personal experience or knows of studies or customer reviews, I would really appreciate your insights. Are there any special precautions to take when placing the furniture in a room with a lot of sunlight?
Thanks in advance and best regards!

It’s interesting how many people here immediately talk about problems with sunlight and Hemnes. Honestly, isn’t that a bit exaggerated?
Sure, that’s a general basic rule for wood protection, but Hemnes isn’t some luxury product that needs to be treated like it’s extremely delicate. Wood is alive, it changes, and that’s part of it.
I would argue that if someone is really worried about fading, they might be better off getting plastic furniture or covering everything with UV protection film and living in the dark.
Especially since there are no major structural damages.
My appeal: relax a bit about the fear of sunlight; wood is durable, and Hemnes clearly demonstrates that.

- Hemnes furniture is usually painted or coated with clear varnish. This protects it from moisture and provides some UV protection.
- Nevertheless, UV rays are persistent and will gradually alter the colors over time.
- Direct sunlight should be avoided to maintain the appearance in the long run.
I recommend regularly checking whether the finish is still intact, as small scratches or damages can quickly lead to visible sun damage.
A glass top as a protective surface can also help protect the finish if you don’t have shutters or curtains.
